Ferritin, folate levels -

Morning all,

Just had a call from docs with results

Folate - 1.8 should be over 3.3

Ferritin 15 - - should be over 30 but they accept 13

B12 ok

Waiting for zinc results still

Doc prescribed folate for 4 months and iron tablets again for 3 months 1 a day or every other day. Other bloods re Full blood count fine.

Just hoping it will help towards stopping my hair coming out. So hope it’s not the carb that’s doing it.

X

B12 ok

Not acceptable. B12 reference intervals (ranges) have a significant bit between clearly deficient and questionable. You need your result and the upper and lower numbers.

We have seen people who, with a lower limit of 180 and a result of 181 would have been told they were fine. (That is made up, but extremely close to the reality as seen by some.)

Have you had thyroid results back

Such low vitamin levels suggests you may need Carbimazole reducing

You absolutely must get B12 result

Also vitamin D needs testing and coeliac blood test if you’re not already on strictly gluten free diet

Ferritin is terrible

You need full iron panel test for anaemia and highly likely to need iron supplements

Hi

I’ve just gone on to 5mg of carb as of last week 😀. Doc said b12 was fine. No thyroid results yet - waiting for appointment which will another couple of weeks as consultant away. Had coeliac test a couple months ago was fine. I’ve looked at my blood results for red and white blood online and they were all normal. Asked the doc about this she said ferritin will dip first before them - then lead to anemia. So will be starting iron again. X

You’re legally entitled to actual test results

Do you have access to test results online, if not get that set up now

UK GP practices are supposed to offer everyone online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need "enhanced access" to see blood results.

In reality many GP surgeries do not have blood test results online yet

Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up.

If B12 is under 500 it’s too low

So

Folate is deficient 1.8 should be over 3.3

B12 is insufficient (but GP won’t agree)

GP should prescribe folic acid

Once you finish folic acid prescription

supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid)

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance

Difference between folate and folic acid

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Thorne Basic B or Jarrow B Right are recommended options that contains folate, but both are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule)

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate methyl folate supplement and separate B12

Low B12 symptoms

b12deficiency.info/signs-an...

With serum B12 result below 500, (Or active B12 below 70) recommended to be taking a B12 supplement

once your serum B12 is over 500 (or Active B12 level has reached 70), stop the B12 and just carry on with the B Complex.

Hi - my thyroid results go straight to consultant not GP and don’t go on my patient one from GP. So no I don’t have access online for the hospital. The thought of phoning the secretary is so off putting had loads of carry on with her and her not doing her job properly. I’m just going to wait till he’s back and let him tell me I think x
