Diagnosis of Colon Cancer

Buttonmoon299 profile image

I have just been diagnosed with colon cancer and am due for chemotherapy very soon. Having struggled with keeping my thyroid levels correct for many years, I wondered if anyone had any advice for me on what to eat, how to manage while undergoing chemotherapy,

If this should be posted on another forum, I apologise.

I don't know the answer but just wanted to give you moral support and send my love. Maybe someone out there can give us the answers ( I am also starting chemo after having my kidney removed) its a frightening place to be without worrying about your levels I would ask the doctors to do more frequent test to keep an eye on them. Hope you get lots of useful answers and get well soon. Xxxx

Afraid I have no helpful advice.

But I didn't want you to feel people were ignoring you - they are not (I'm sure). Hope it goes as well as possible.

Members of other forums might be better able to help. There are many cancer-related forums here on HU - which you can get to by using this link:

Maybe spend a few minutes trawling through and deciding which look best for you?

Do make sure at every point that those who are treating you are fully aware that you have a thyroid issue.

Antony Williams, aka medical medium has some dietary advice about healing the body, that many people have had success with. The book 'cleanse to heal' is a good book to start with.

( celery juice is extremely healing for the gut ) I wouldn't be without it.

bagpuss61, A quick 'google' will bring up lots about this chap, which is no surprise as he's done a good job at getting publicity. And of course, we all would so much prefer to be able to 'heal' ourselves through diet, instead of invasive medical surgery, chemo etc., so it's easy to get swayed by such things. However, his claims are extremely questionable in the opinion of many. Here's just one of many articles about celery juice eatingwell.com/article/2914...

you are entitled to your opinion, as we all are. I've been doing this for over a year and i can see and feel the benefits.

bagpuss61, Are you saying you've done this following a diagnosis of colon cancer?

No, diverticulitis.

That's an interesting article.

I know when I looked before, the assessment of some was that the intake of agro-chemicals if taking those large quantities of celery would be very significant. (And buying only organic celery would likely be prohibitive for most of us.)

Morrisons sell organic celery for 99p

Which still adds up to £1.98 a day (two bunches of celery to create the recommened two cups a day). So, almost £14 a week for one person. Certainly not affordable for many people, especially in the current economic climate.

I can’t even eat celery let alone drink celery juice… just thinking about makes me ugh.

Very approximately twice the price of non-organic (and will obviously vary).

Or, from Ocado, 75p for M&S non-organic or £2.35 for organic.

It obviously depends on what is available to each of us - both access to the product and ability to pay.

Thank you. This sounds of interest.

I have a friend currently having chemo, she’s about 3 months into treatment and doing really well. All the info you want will be given by the chemo staff, they know the answers and can point you in the right direction if they can’t help with a particular question, you should have access to dietitians and other specialists who you might need, the help my friend has had is impressive.

'They have to decide for themselves what they try.'

Agreed, but it's important to point out the negative as well as the positive. It's all about making an 'informed decison'.

Hello Buttonmoon299

You're on the right track thinking about diet right away as part of your cancer management strategy.

Steady nerve comes first. Stress hikes up cortisol, and drives down thyroid function. You need every ounce of energy to search for, digest and implement, new and helpful info. Hope you have closed ones, family member(s) and/or friend(s), who are happy to share the reading load with you. It would be merrier if they can share your new healthy eating journey.

Dr. Michael Greger has a comprehensive website on healthy eating. He has amassed a team to help research, digest and disseminate peer-reviewed scientific research to the public. All information is referenced, easy to search, bite-sized, constantly updated, and concisely summarised in his books as well. He is one of a few who has inspired me on my health journey. Hope you'll find his website helpful, too.
