Excessive sweating?

Johnljc profile image

Hi , over the last couple of years I've started to excessive sweat under my arms and groin area . I'm not sure if this is down to my medication but as my doses have increased the sweating issue has got worse.

Anyone else have experience of this

well deal with the most obvious thing first ~ 'sweating more than usual' could be considered to be an early sign of overmediction... why were doses increased ?

Johnljc profile image
Johnljc in reply totattybogle

Because I was told I was under medicated

tattybogle profile image
tattybogle in reply toJohnljc

ok, i now see you are on a lowish dose of 75mcg .. so my 'overmedication' explanation is unlikely to be the reason .

Hi johnljc. just been reading you previous to catch up . ( should have done it before , soz) can you update us with what happened re latest test results .

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

TPOab positive / scan of thyroid "on small side "/ long history of struggling to increase Levo / Tried 6 months without any Levo and felt much better during that time but went back on Levo due to bad blood results / I note you did previously say the sweating was still a problem to some degree even when on no levo at all for those 6 mths.....

"June 2021 ... Free T4 - 11.7 ( 7.86 - 14.4 )

TSH -6.12 ( 0.35 - 5.50 )

At the time I was on 50mg/25mg alternate days .... had lots of dizzy spells

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aug 2021 ... Free T4 - 14.1 ( 7.86 - 14.4 )
TSH - 5.41 ( 0.35 - 5 50)
Currently on 50mg daily ..... exhausted all the time , short tempered and tingles under eyes. had a phone call..... it was stated everything is fine , when I queried tsh being at the wrong end of range , I was told its where it should be and to retest bloods in 8 weeks ...."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What were the next results ? (due around Nov/Dec )

Have you had any other blood test results since then ?

How long ago did you go up to 75mcg ?

It is possible it is a problem associated with your adrenal glands, cortisol levels or aldosterone levels. See this link :

paulrobinsonthyroid.com/sym...

I'm sure there must be other causes, but none spring to mind right now.

I have just read the link thank you it gives me a clear understanding now I am going to have another chat with GP hopefully she will find it helpful

Hi. I agree with Tattybogle. I stopped sweating completely when I was very hypothyroid but when I became slightly overmedicated last month I noticed I would have episodes of sweating and also had some fierce night sweats. Could being overmedicated be a possible reason?

Johnljc profile image

I'm currently on 75mcg of eltroxin levothyroxine ... my last test in beginning April come back normal range ... can't find results at the min

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toJohnljc

Please add actual results and ranges

Request GP test B12, folate, ferritin and vitamin D

Jazzw profile image

Optimal or within normal range? There can be a huge difference when it comes to feeling well.

A year ago, you posted Vit B12 levels which were rather low—in the 200s (ideally you want to see 500+ for a serum B12 result).

Have you had B12 tested again recently?

Johnljc profile image
Johnljc in reply toJazzw

Not yet but its my plan too

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator

Low B12 is linked to sweating

75mcg is a low dose for a bloke

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

When were vitamin levels last tested

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally before 9am last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toJohnljc

Multivitamins never recommended on here

Cheap poorly absorbed ingredients and almost always contain iodine not recommended for anyone on levothyroxine unless tested and found deficient

Levothyroxine contains all the iodine you need

Suggest you get full thyroid and vitamin testing done yourself

ALWAYS test thyroid levels early morning, ideally before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Looking for Ft3 at least 50-60% through range

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

Which brand

Do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning

Come back with new post once you get results

Johnljc profile image

I always get Eltroxin levothyroxine.... I think it is time to get a private test do e

Nothing until you get blood test results back

Always do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning

Test early morning, before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Do you normally take levothyroxine waking or bedtime?

Stop multivitamins a week before blood test as contain biotin and iron

I already had hyperhidrosis excessive sweating of underarms, hands and feet but it can be aggravated on its severity by other factors as mentioned below.

Only really started suffering with this since starting meds 4 ish years ago

Mozzymoo22 profile image

I've always been like this, even before I was medicated. I think it's due to stress on my adrenals.

Johnljc profile image

I used to love the sun and sit in it for hours .... but now after 10 mins in soaked

Suecoo66 profile image

It could be thyroid related as it can cause sweating, I've noticed that I excessively sweat at night on a regular basis.

Recommend getting full thyroid and vitamin testing

Looking at your posts …are you still only on 75mcg levothyroxine?

Night sweats often low B12

Come back with new post once you get results

Medichecks is usually the cheapest

Always test thyroid levels early morning, ideally before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Johnljc profile image
Johnljc in reply toSlowDragon

Yes still on 75mcg .... im going to organise a test ( is blood draw best or is the finger prick adequate?)It's not only night sweating.... 10 mins into a walk I'm soaked

SlowDragon profile image

Most people manage DIY finger prick test

Tips on how to do DIY finger prick test

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Drink plenty water day before and before test

Allow plenty of time first go

Make sure you are warm and exercise before hand

Stand up to do test

Costs extra for private blood draw

Medichecks or Blue horizon have list of local clinics

Worth waiting to see if Medichecks is on offer tomorrow before ordering…..Thyroid Thursdays

Thank you I am going to get a full check although my B12 was ‘normal’ the last test 🙁

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toDoris11

B12 range is vast - typically 170-770

GP would say anything within that range is “normal”

You’re legally entitled to copies of your actual test results and ranges

On levothyroxine we usually need B12 over 500

Doris11 profile image
Doris11 in reply toSlowDragon

Mine was just over 300 😞😞😞

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toDoris11

Was folate tested too.?

Are you now taking any Vitamin B complex or B12

Doris11 profile image
Doris11 in reply toSlowDragon

Yes it was serum folate is 8 (range 3.9 - 20)

Doris11 profile image
Doris11 in reply toSlowDragon

No

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toDoris11

So folate also on lower side

Suggest you try taking B complex and separate B12 as outlined in my previous reply

Only start with vitamin B complex

Then after couple weeks add separate B12

Probably will only next separate B12 for couple of months

Doris11 profile image
Doris11 in reply toSlowDragon

Thank you so much for your advice 🥰

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply toDoris11

supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid) may be beneficial.This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels too

Difference between folate and folic acid

chriskresser.com/folate-vs-...

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Thorne Basic B or Jarrow B Right are recommended options that contains folate, but both are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule)

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

endo.confex.com/endo/2016en...

endocrinenews.endocrine.org...

In week before blood test you might want to consider taking a separate methyl folate supplement and separate B12

Low B12 symptoms

b12deficiency.info/signs-an...

With serum B12 result below 500, (Or active B12 below 70) recommended to be taking a B12 supplement as well as a B Complex (to balance all the B vitamins) initially for first 2-4 months, then once your serum B12 is over 500 (or Active B12 level has reached 70), stop the B12 and just carry on with the B Complex.

Hello...I have suffered with excessive sweating for many years...ascribed to menopause for the first twenty years, then after I was diagnosed hypothyroid ten years ago, there was no improvement. May be coincidence, but the night sweats have improved massively since I took a reliable Vitamin D which is oil-based. Also no longer take TEVA brand... My sweating in the day is, bizarrely, around my eyes, and runs down my face like water. At night I also sometimes get a lurid reddening of the skin on hands, feet and legs, but the Vit. D3 seems to have helped with this too.

My doctor doesn't seem to care just says it could be a number of things and use strong deodorant the type that actually stop you sweating , how am I expected to apply that from head to foot . Along with that the weight gain is on going my joints ache life is pretty dam miserable
