Hyperthyroidism or Hypothyroidism?

Hi, not sure if anyone can help me out with this but I have had quite a few different blood tests in the last 8 weeks and they seem to contradict themselves a little.

In December I had raised T3, low TSH which I know is consistent to Hyperthyroidism. I had further blood tests yesterday and they have shown my T4 and TSH to be in range (they didn't test my T3 again, not sure why).

They also tested Serum thyroid peroxidase antibody concentration and this came up at 406.95 IU/mL (normal range is 0.0 - 5.0). So this indicates that I have Hashimoto Thyroiditis but this seems to be opposite to what the first blood tests indicated?

Do I have Hyperthyroidism or Hypothyroidism?

Thanks!

As you know of Hashimoto's, do you know anything about it? Hashi's is where the immune system attacks and gradually destroys the thyroid, ultimately causing hypothyroidism. Your high TPO antibodies confirm Hashi's.

With Hashi's you can swing from hypo to a false hyper episode and back again which seems to be what you are describing.

When the immune system attacks the thyroid releases a load of hormone, you may get hyper type symptoms (this is a false hyper not true hyperthyroidism) along with high FT4/FT3 levels and low TSH. The hyper swings are temporary, and eventually things go back to normal. Test results settle back down and hypo symptoms may return.

Hashi's isn't treated, it's the resulting hypothyroidism that's treated.

For a diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashi's) here in the UK we need over range TSH with raised antibodies.

Here is some general information about Hashi's:

Fluctuations in symptoms and test results are common with Hashi's.

Most doctors dismiss antibodies as being of no importance and know little or nothing about Hashi's and how it affects the patient, test results and symptoms. You need to read, learn, understand and help yourself where Hashi's is concerned.

Some members have found that adopting a strict gluten free diet can help, although there is no guarantee.

Gluten contains gliadin (a protein) which is thought to trigger autoimmune attacks so eliminating gluten can help reduce these attacks.

You don't need to be gluten sensitive or have Coeliac disease for a gluten free diet to help.

Supplementing with selenium l-selenomethionine 200mcg daily is said to help reduce the antibodies, as can keeping TSH suppressed.

Hashi's and gut absorption problems tend to go hand in hand and can very often result in low nutrient levels or deficiencies. It's essential to test Vit D, B12, Folate and Ferritin and address any problems. You are welcome to post these results, including reference ranges (plus units of measurement for Vit D and B12), for comment and suggestions for supplementing where necessary.
