Hi everyone,
I’m just wondering if anyone has taken NDT during pregnancy?

Before about 1970 …..the whole of U.K. hypothyroid population who were pregnant
Now ….probably not many …..especially under NHS ….
At one time - since 1892 NDT s were the only replacement available. I'm sure pregnant women would have been given NDTs if they were hypothyroid otherwise they would have died.
NDTs - natural dessicated thyroid hormones are made from animals thyroid glands, so more conducive to the human body than a synthetic replacement.
Being on NDT is usually only a problem for medical staff, not patients. At one time NDT was the only treatment available for hypothyroidism, or later, the main treatment for hypothyroidism, and that was true for about 80 years. Many, many thousands of babies must have been born during that time with mothers who were on NDT.
Some old posts from a member on her pregnancy which happened while she was on NDT :

Good luck.
My daughter is currently taking thyroid s while pregnant. She's 14 weeks and getting regular tests done. One doctor said she would would a cretin baby ffs! But I am keeping eye on her through it as we are both on ndt. Not sure how it will be towards end or pregnancy so we r winging it currently.
I’m my humble opinion it’s the superior option compared to synthetic unless you can’t find one that works
- Yes, much scaremongering about the dangers of T3 medication in pregnancy, including requiring withdrawal of T3 meds! 🤯- NDT PER 60 mcg, 9mcg T3, 38mcg T4, Claimed to be a dangerously too great a proportion of T3 … rather dubious assumption based on one paper sampling 14 individuals !!
- Foetal development in the first trimester from conception onwards needs both T4 and T3! And both supplied by thyroid healthy mums!
(Details here … joe.bioscientifica.com/view...
- By week 12, foetal thyroid development completing & by week 16, producing own thyroidal outputs
- Mum’s own thyroid medication levels need to take the increase in placental supply needed in those first trimester 12 or so weeks into account. NB … foetus has capacity to some extent to mediate oversupply but not undersupply.
-Mum needs to keep medics “happy”, lowish TSH, upper quartile T4, mid to upper mid quartile T3 … any more, esp with suppressed TSH & alarm bells ring & red lights flash!
- So need to go into conception in good T4/T3 health and if necessary increase medication before conception. Only actual full TFTs, starting before conception will tell what effect the NDT dosage has on the 3 results & give some idea of adjustments. Some have needed to supplement NDT WITH T4 so as to keep levels “medically acceptable”.
- Of course all assuming the woman doesn’t have health issues that strictly contraindicate taking T3 , do not know what those might be that at the same time are considered safe enough to take on pregnancy!
Hope that helps … must repeat, T3 meds during pregnancy is considered highly contentious if not downright dangerous … but where is the evidence for this ???
Rats! Had to type the link in, copy/pasting wouldn’t work & on testing it “cannot be found”.
Think a rogue “)” at the end … so … joe.bioscientifica.com/view...
2nd doctor not happy with my daughters tsh as it was 0.02 and t4 in range but won't test t3 so they are now referring her to endo.
Its a pain as we take thyroid s from Thailand which I know will freak them out even more.
Not good for a 16 week pregnant girl on her first baby aghhh
Am hoping the endo is ndt friendly or it will be even worse
Can anyone please recommend a doctor who is able to monitor a pregnancy on NDT? I was told to switch to T4+T3 combo medication as I'm planning a pregnancy, but I feel miserable since I switched and can't seem to find the right dose. I'd love to be able to go back on NDT and simply find a doctor who is able to monitor me while I'm pregnant.
