I failed to obtain results received by MMH on 18-11-21 as blood was haemolised.

There was no results on the log, & I thought the sample hadn't reached the UK lab.

I was so brain fogged that I had to be prompted by a member to get in touch with the lab!

It seems that the lab had sent a replacement kit the next day, but that hadn't occurred to me! So before when I found the new kit in the post box - I had taken the 3rd dose around 4.30 PM, & only then discovered the kit in my postbox. As I was so ill & brain fogged I decided that I would need to take the new test in middle of night forcing me to make the effort to leave house & post in morning.

I set the alarm for 2 am, but my eyes were so bad that I misread the clock believing it was 4am. So I rushed it, I was frozen, but didn't leave time to warm up with the electric fire. (The colder I am, the more frozen my brain seems to be). It's kind of ironic that I prepared for the 1st kit perfectly test kit with no viable sample resulting, but the 2nd kit produced no blood, + I had to stab my wrist with scissors having failed to obtain finger blood with all 3 lances & then only produced one drop of blood not even enough to reach the 1st line in the tube, & yet when I emailed the lab a week later to ask if they had received the sample They gave the following result...

TSH 0.14, (normal range 0.27 - 4.2) FT4, 8.5, (normal range 12 - 22),

FT3 4.3 (normal range 3.1 -6.8)

I had only left the 10MG biotin off for 3 days, and (not expecting the test so soon, took the biggest dose of NDT in the late afternoon 9 hours before the test. So I am wondering if the NDT I bought is fake with these latest results?

It sounds horrendous the way you collected your blood in the end, I'm not sure I'd be that brave!

If you take 10mg biotin then this is considered a high dose (5-10mg is considered high).

From Testing.com

testing.com/articles/biotin...

How quickly biotin is cleared from your body depends on factors such as the amount taken (dose) and the health of your kidneys—biotin is eliminated from the body through the kidneys. The level of biotin in the blood is highest about 1 to 3 hours after taking a dose. Biotin can affect your lab results for hours to days after taking a dose, depending on these factors.

So it's not clear how many days to leave off, 3 might be enough although erring on the side of caution it's wise to leave 7 days for a high dose. So we don't really know if your results are accurate and one does wonder how they managed to do all three tests with one drop of blood.

Let's say that your results are accurate (and 9 hours gap between last dose of NDT and blood test is perfect) what makes you think your NDT might be fake? What exactly are you taking?

I do wonder why you felt the need to do the test when you did, you didn't have to panic to do it immediately, it could have waited for when it was more convenient :)

Thanks for your response Susie. There is no way of knowing what my present GFR is, but it has been low in the past when I was able to obtain GP annual tests. I noticed that when I left off biotin for 2-3 days my FT3 or FT4 results tended to drop under range, in spite of having to take NDT or T3 on morning of test,(in order to travel to surgery) yet if I did not leave sufficient gap between biotin & test the FT3 & FT4 were at bottom of range in spite of a 10-12 gap between HRT & test.

The reason I question the strength of the NDT is (1). my levels have dropped from when I was on metavive or tiromel. (2). I have never been so physically & cognitively impaired, ever.

& (3). my TSH has increased 14 fold. But also I could not stay awake, at all hours of day or evening, which I have never experienced before - even before I started self medicating.+ I have put on much weight in last 6 weeks & cannot fit clothes.

At the time of last test I was taking 1 and one quarter grains i.e. 75mg.

I had deadly deadlines to meet, & yet was bedridden, that's why I rushed.

I failed. Now I will have to order metavive again. My last chance to order is now, this week. As of January 1st 2022 it will no longer be possible to buy any medicine from UK or Europe.

What dose of NDT were you taking . Is it 'proper' NDT ,or metavive.

Did you buy it from somewhere or was it given to you.

Are you taking anything else with it, like levo or T3

Were you taking the same dose for 6 weeks .

I was taking for the 1st time (proper NDT) 75 mg thyroid S porcine NDT. I bought from Thailand. I started around 9 weeks ago 7 weeks on same dose at 1 & 1/4 tabs. I was previously taking bovine metavive with better lab results, & prior to that I was on both metavive & tiromel. I was almost normal while on t3 & metavive for a short while, but I overshot the sweet spot, & went a bit over range FT3 & had to drop the T3 & revert to metavive again.

I have never been able to obtain levo, or anything else from Dr's, only high dose propranolol, high dose anti depressants, anti hypertensives, PPI's antihystamines, eye drops, nizoral, artificial saliva, nasal drops, embalming fluid & greasy soap & at one point anti seizure meds, to name a few.

Strangely none of these cures cured my hypothyroidism....

I no longer have access to the medical industry & am trying to get well enough to try & obtain any medical records. The following are results of MMH. I am not in UK, so this is all I can get.

24-11-21 (on 75mg NDT) - TSH 0.14 - FT4 8.5 - FT3 4.3

14-9-21 (bovine metavive & NDT) - TSH 0.01 - FT4 12.8 - FT3 4.9

5 -7-21 (bovine metavive & T3?) - TSH 0.01 - FT4 14.7 - FT3 5.4

11-5-21 (bovine metavive alone?) - TSH 0.02 - FT4 12.5 - FT3 4.4

8-1-21 (bovine metavive & T3) - TSH - 0.01 - FT4 19.72 - FT3 9

Thanks

why wont you be able to buy EU / UK medicine in jersey after january ?

Jenny583 profile image
Jenny583 in reply to tattybogle

At present local purchasers of overseas goods (like medicine) only pay local tax on goods up to £135. The government have announced that the de minimus will drop to £60, then soon to zero, so forcing overseas traders to extract tax at their own expense on all (local) purchasers. This means that we will not only be taxed VAT & extortionate import costs but also local tax on imports as well as English VAT.

So in order to make it worthwhile to send to Jersey - Overseas merchants will have to charge the VAT of their country (which they already do) + now they will have to go through all kinds of expensive & complicated red tape to also extract Jersey taxes in advance before they can release the merchandise, and also charge more postage.

Not surprisingly most UK merchants have indicated that they will not export anything to Jersey in future. Last week I noticed a tiny plastic dustbin for sale on Ebay. £10 including English VAT & free delivery, that was in November 2020. They quoted over £10 for delivery to Jersey. What will it be like next year? My tiny glass bin was stolen - again, I have not been able to obtain one at any price here, so does this mean I have to put jars in with the rubbish? We have to import everything here as we are a tiny island.

I had huge difficulty obtaining NDT, I had to keep chopping & changing addresses in order to get it delivered, as a result it had to go to the English customs before it was sent here. And NDT does not seem to work, so it's back to whole glandulars even though most everyone sees it as snake oil.

Are you still taking propranolol?

Propranolol will significantly reduce uptake and conversion of thyroid hormones

Also tends to lower magnesium levels

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

You absolutely can not stop taking propranolol suddenly. Must be weened off incredibly SLOWLY

slow dragon sorry to butt in here but reaaly curious as to whether other beta-blockers, such as amlodapine which is a selective hypertension medication, can reduce uptake and conversion of thyroid hormones?

SlowDragon profile image

I think it’s only propranolol

So many medics seem unaware of the interaction of the two even though propranolol is frequently prescribed if hyperthyroid

Drugs that may decrease PTH include cimetidine and propranolol.

Sorry to but in SD, By PTH, do you mean parathyroid hormone? I think it was when I stopped the propranolol that my PTH went insanely high. Diagnosed secondary hyperparathyroidism.

Yes

Is there anything else I should know?

Drugs that may decrease PTH include cimetidine and propranolol.

Thanks SD, that is very informative. Too tired to think now.🥱

I was prescribed propranolol originally for severe thyrotoxicosis. But I was told that it was a tranquilizer, so I didn't click. Then a few years later it was prescribed for migraine. It made me ill, so when I made the side effects connection I only took it once a month. But by then I was condemned with a diagnosis of depression as every side effect of every drug was interpreted as "depression". My brief married life to a sick man was marred by that drug. It should be banned!

Then circa 2000 a relative was breaking into my house & stealing the propranolol from my kitchen draw. I told my dying Mum who I was nursing that they were going missing, & that I wondered could the plumbers that I had in were stealing them? then she told me who was taking them. She had given them a key to my door.

The belief it seems is that propranolol is some kind of magical cure for driving tests!

So I believed via an old wives tale that they were a force for good, & so when I was told shortly after to take them every day I thought they would improve not just my BP but also my concentration which had disappeared.

Only through T UK did I learn that they make things worse. Ironically I was given a diagnosis of long standing hypothyroidism on the day I was prescribed propranolol, but my memory was so bad that I forgot that diagnosis!

I took amlodipine for about 3 years, it had no effect on my thyroid levels. I took amlodipine at bedtime and thyroid meds around 5am so about 6 hour gap between them. I am no longer taking amlodipine but currently taking bisoprolol and again no effect on thyroid levels, I take bisoprolol about 8.30-9am, thyroid meds still at around 5am.

Hi SlowDragon,It's been about 3-4 years since i stopped taking propranolol. I had very low magnesium, though not tested. Thanks to this forum I learned, & take mag glycinate & mag threanonate alternate nights.

I had problems when forced to stop prescribed propranolol suddenly when I was 25 YO. So I knew not to stop suddenly a few years ago when I took it for very high BP. Still have some around for emergencies.

PPI's also lower magnesium & B12. Only thing I take now is self sourced magnesium & NDT, occasional self sourced individual B vitamins & vitamin C , chewing gum, eye drops, antihystamines , & occasional random supplements, zopiclone, etc.

Hi Jenny583 just want to say that i sliced my finger with a blade to extract some blood for MMH thyroid test. Unfortunately, i still could not extract enough blood despite taking blood thinners. Regardless, i sent it off, but the sample was not suitable. Surprised that you managed to get some results with your second attempt. Do you still have high blood pressure?

Jenny583 profile image
Jenny583 in reply to dragon51

Hi dragon51, Aghast that your efforts to extract blood were in vain! I have been to ill to look for the BP monitor, but don't think it's high. It was high 10-11 years ago because( IMO )the drugs that destroyed what was left of my metabolism caused my body to react that way. When I stopped the antidepressants against the advice of GP's my previously very high BP & pulse dropped to extreme low.

Yes I was stuck on propranolol 20 years….due to very inadequate dose thyroid hormones, vitamin D deficiency and magnesium deficiency and gluten intolerance

Only by correcting low vitamins, gluten free was I able to ween off propranolol …now prescribed T3 alongside levothyroxine

Jenny583 profile image
Jenny583 in reply to SlowDragon

Same here SlowDragon, low everything. Only difference is that I had to educate myself & self medicate for low everything as you, but couldn't even get prescription vitamin D3 or thyroid. But with food shortages & insane food prices I am forced to eat gluten.

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply to Jenny583

I never got any vitamin D prescribed even though vitamin D was 12nmol

Strictly gluten free diet has been astonishing….I never ever eaten gluten
