My thyroid tongue

Not the most attractive picture but my fat tongue hasn’t quite gone away, as you can see from the picture, I still have ridges in the side. In no way as deep as they used to be before optimal treatment began but still visible. Anyone else had this? Will it ever go away? Is it just hypo related or does anyone have any other thoughts? I’m just curious really, I don’t often notice it these days but I have a sore spot on the front of my tongue that ‘made’ me aware again that my tongue still usually sits between my teeth.

Oh no! That’s no good! I love food, if my tongue got in the way of that of cut it off! Lol Have you looked into it some more?

Nope. I’m just destined to be a macroglossic hypo lame-o forever

I think that’s a low b vitamins tongue..? Someone else will comment for sure. How is your folate and b12? That said I do sometime trip on my tongue when speaking!

Yeah could be that too, I’m experimenting with B Vits atm. My folate is always low, so I’m once again trying to raise it.

Once I got my T3 high (by taking 25mcg a day on top of 100 Levo) all my vits miraculously improved. I’ve had that tongue so many times over the years.

I am on optimal treatment for thyroid but Vits/minerals still not optimal.

It’s macroglossia from hypothyroidism. One symptom one of my drs always looks for.

I have hypo but also had swollen and sore tongue. Finally realised it was b12 deficiency- a common comorbidity. Treated it with 5000mcg daily tablets. It subsided in around four weeks and hasn't returned. Now take b12 weekly as IM shot. Other hypo symptoms have also fallen away.

Check out the b12 deficiency sights such as B12d.org.

Good luck.

Hi I hope you don't mind me asking but do you buy your B12 shots, I get mine from GP but only every 3 months and its not frequent enough. I've heard a few members mention self injecting but have no idea where to start.

Please ask this question in a private message to the member as this is a prescription only item in the UK and we cannot name sources where to buy without prescription. You can ask this on the PA forum as many members there self inject:

Hi so sorry, didn't realise it was prescription only. Apologies. Have messaged Cornwaller.

Hi, atm I’m not taking B12, I want to get an accurate picture of what my diet provides, then maybe do a few PA tests ect

I’ve had this for years (since 2010 at least) not diagnosed with Hashimotos until 2013. I am B12 deficient and have 3 monthly injections (I also self inject as one injection every 12 weeks is not nearly enough) and nothing seems to help.

Looked up macroglosdia-thingey :-"Macroglossia happens due to the accumulation of adipose tissue in the submucosa of the tongue. Macroglossia in hypothyroidism is due to increased accumulation of subcutaneous mucopolysaccharides due to a decreased degradation."

That's what Google says

Anyway your tongue looks like mine ,and NHS won't prescribe me anything 'cos my tsh is "in range "

Anyone know more about this tongue-thing so I can take it to medics?

Mine tongue is worse, looks like a scalloped potato chip!

NWA6 profile image

I can imagine. My one was worse before optimal treatment but as the tongue is the fastest healing organ, I wondered what else is going on, maybe for me it’s B12, I’m investigating 🤗

You possibly need B12.
