Before I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism I had noticed my tongue was scalloped-people always said it was dehydration (I drink plenty of water daily) then through research found like to thyroid-however recently it has been getting worse-anyone had similar experience? also once your properly medicated will this go away?

swollen tongue-thyroid?
I've still got it. I take T3 and feel ok but my tongue is still scalloped and has been for about 6 years. Clemmie
Goggle suggests low B12. Have you had B12, vitamin D, folate and ferritin checked?
I haven't had any of those things checked slowdragon
There is a significant overlap of symptoms of B12 deficiency and thyroid ... and also a good chance of both occurring together as both can be caused by auto-immune conditions.Swollen tongue is certainly a classic symptom of B12 deficiency
You may find joining the PAS forum useful as B12 deficiency is a condition that is very difficult to get diagnosed and treated properly. Although anaemia is another classic symptom of B12 deficiency significant numbers of people develop other symptoms long before any anaemia shows up - I have 40+ years before finally finding out B12 was my problem and i've never shown any signs of anaemia
Reading earlier posts I see you are coeliac. Have you seen gastroenterologist?
Are You on vitamin d and magnesium supplements for this? What about calcium?
Can you get your GP to check Vit D, b12 folate and ferritin.
If not many of us have to resort to private tests - most popular being blue horizon plus eleven test.

I've been gluten free for two years and due to my very strict diet I only see dietitian for annual review- so I usually only get tested for antibodies, liver functioning and calcium. I believe anaemia tests have always been clear (I've been tested few times since constant complaining of fatigue-funny they never tested thyroid before). I have recently had bone density test which came back normal. I think I will look at getting a private test. Thanks again
Its mucin, which infiltrates all the tissues and causes swelling. Excess mucin indicates hypothyroidism....
I only got rid of mine after several years on ndt.... It suddenly went away.
Another sign of excess mucin is to pinch your skin on your upper arm... You should be able to pick up skin, seperate from fat and muscle.... Skin infiltrated with mucin is thick and spongy and cannot be lifted....
Correct medication levels will get rid of it, eventually......

Mine got better after I started having B12 injections for pernicious anaemia but it does start to swell again if I don't take my daily B12 sublinguals
You have my sympathy. Mine is so swollen that I can't talk properly and it struggles to fit in my mouth, it's horrible!
I’m the same ! That’s how I explain to doc it won’t fit in mouth and feel like choking !!!
Low B12 or hypo.
Although Dr Steven Park says it is caused by modern jaws being too narrow because of modern diets, there fore tongue too big, gets easily displaced to back of mouth - leading to sleep apnea.
This is a classic hypo symptom. I used to have it off and on. Although this makes me realise I haven't had it for ages. I've been on NDT since November.
low b12
I read that it can be a build up of toxins in the body, that fits me as my filters ( lymph probs ) are pretty useless! The swollen, scalloped tongue thing always seems worse for me when I'm not draining fluid very well.

my tongue has that rippled look too I was told its a sigh of thyroid problems
Paid for private blood test from medichecks and although tsh still too high my b12 and vitamin d are both very low. Can't believe GP said was viral last week! Clearly b12
Hi my tongue swells at times, it doesn't stay swollen permanently but it swells quite often. I have noticed lately that I have a ridge (swelling under my bottom lip). As you say it is so uncomfortable and I also struggle with words at time. I am on levothyroxine (100) but just had a battery of test so will check to see if vits were done. Liz I am sure you are probably correct in saying its to do with fluid retention.
