Issues after COVID 19

Hi all

I had COVID at the beginning of the pandemic and have had trouble getting back to feeling well.

Main issues are:

Blood pressure. Never had high blood pressure before, but COVID left it very high, now lots better and hope to be able to come off meds in a few months, but will be nearly 2 yrs.

Aches and pains all over. I am a very achy person now.

Increased frequency of angioedema attacks, been having one this weekend.

Difficulty sleeping.

Medics not helping, anyone else having post cove issues.

Had COVID on Feb last year.

Regards

Paul

Suggest you get FULL thyroid and vitamin testing done, if not done so already

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Are you currently taking T3?

On day before blood test, split T3 into 3 smaller doses, at roughly equal 8 hour intervals, taking last 1/3rd of daily dose approx 8-12 hours before test

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

List of private testing options

Medichecks Thyroid plus antibodies and vitamins

Blue Horizon Thyroid Premium Gold includes antibodies, cortisol and vitamins by DIY fingerprick test

If you can get GP to test vitamins and antibodies then cheapest option for just TSH, FT4 and FT3

£29 (via NHS private service ) and 10% off down to £26.10 if go on thyroid uk for code

PaulB, Sorry you've not fully recovered. As you're obviously aware, this has been the case with quite a number of people. I don't think GPs have any idea how to help.

Have your thyroid levels been checked recently? If yes, post the results here, along with details of your current medications.

Hi tests in the dreaded range, TSH only, but just not feeling great.

PaulB, Perhaps consider doing a private test that includes FT4 and FT3. That would probably be a better clue as to whether or not there's any thyroid involvement in how you're feeling. monitormyhealth.org.uk/thyr...

Hi my best advice is go alkaline I also got covid Feb this year , covid seems to thrive in an acidic environment I have been having cucumber and melon smoothies for the alkaline content , you can do many things to go alkaline have cider vinegar , take magnesium - a good quality one Holland and Barrett sell an excellent liquid one - or the cheapest way is have half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in water .Coffee and alcohol are acidic so I am just drinking red wine at weekends now but my morning coffee in non negotiable

If you are going to make claims about Covid, please include relevant references.

Personal experience, of course, if fine. But you have not supported your statement about Covid thriving in acidic environments.

Its purely personal experience but I will look for scientific data to support my experience

The only significant point I could find quickly was that Covid appears able to survive the acidity of the stomach. Which is a very different claim to "thrive". It just opens up the possibility of it getting into the intestines despite stomach acid, not because of it. Obviously, those who have low or absent stomach acid have never been protected from any organism by stomach acid.

I saw that too -

To me that says that when the stomach's ph is treated with alkaline covid failed to thrive

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to Lizzo30

It doesn't say that. It says that when Covid is exposed to a fairly strongly acidic environment, pH 2.2, for sufficient time, it might be inactivated. (It is the virus that was treated, not the acidity of the stomach.) But a high level of Covid could conceivably ensure survival through this process (treatment) of sufficient virus to cause disease.

Not at all clear that this says anything at all about the impact of pH on Covid elsewhere. It wasn't meant to.

And a reasonable inference, which still needs proof, is that low stomach acidity (less acid than pH 2.2) would be more likely to allow Covid to survive.

You might care to consider as a pointer this article:

Yes you are right, pity they didnt test covid in an alkaline setting

I still maintain my.opinion which is from personal experience, heartburn can occur with covid and long covid now that can be a symptom of acidity

They answered the question they set out to examine - at least to some extent.

That is, the stomach appears a possible route for Covid infection.

Lizzo30, I will be most impressed if you find genuine scientific data to support this. There is so much still to be learned and understood about Covid-19 that I doubt this sort of 'alternative' approach has been thoroughly researched yet.

I must add that anyone with compromised kidney function should avoid bicarbonate of soda

Covid 19 can have a long-term effect on you, and some people develop post-covid syndromes as a result of it. The most frequent long-term symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, cough, joint stiffness, and chest pain. Other drawbacks include cognitive difficulties, difficulty concentrating, melancholy, muscle soreness, headache, fast heartbeat, and symptoms such as fever.

Ryanphilip_9, I'm sure the OP and most people are aware of this by now. The question is 'what can be done about it'. Ruling out a thyroid hormone imbalance would seem to be a logical suggestion from a thyroid support forum :)

Hello there, my daughter 27 caught covid just before the first lockdown and is still suffering after effects. She was off work for 6 weeks and was not hospitalised. She only had food intolerance before and had no other health issues. She has been left with tiredness(she naps most days after work) breathlessness upon exertion, really bad acid reflux and bad burping and an increase in her bloating due to food intolerance. She put up with this until September this year when a friend of my son who is a medical student suggested she saw her GP.He diagnosed post viral fatigue syndrome and gave her stomach tablets for a month for the acid reflux. He said the flap at the top of the stomach probably got inflamed during covid and couldn't close properly. The tablets would give it a chance to heal. She had to blow into a pipe a few times a day to check her breathing but that came back ok.He said covid induced asthma was really difficult to diagnose and treat. He also said that all those long covid centres mentioned by the government were non existent. The stomach tablets helped but he only gave a month supply and said she'd have to have camera down if they didn't work. She won't have anything like that so is still putting up with it.She blames covid for it all and is terrified of getting it again.Sorry not to be able to post a more positive outcome.Best wishes to you.

Considering I have graves and my eldest son has ulcerative colitis I will try and persuade her to go to GP for full range of bloods including thyroid. She doesn't have much faith in doctors really and doesn't like needles, although she has all required vaccinations and smear test etc and has had flu and covid jabs. She thinks that if your body had any weakness that is what covid would attack and for her it is her digestive system. Thankyou for the link.

I'm aware of at least one naturopathic/functional practitioner that treats long covid if anyone's interested. She considers it similar to ME in many respects and she's treated that for years.

That’s interesting, think I need to get my thyroid treatment re-titrated and then see what next.

Just trying to arrange a private endo consultation.

No problem.

Many believe that there will be numerous long covid cases. Ive heard up to 30%(!!) with various health problems developing up to 5 years later - with symptoms including those youve listed and more. So that would likely mean lots of new drugs developed by big pharma and/or plenty naturopathic activity.

In my opinion, it should be mainly the latter since it gets to the root cause of the problems without side effects of new drugs that may be worse than the problems!.

Get well and stay safe
