Covid 19 Omicron & Thyroid

I caught Covid 19 last weekend and tested positive via PCR - all the omicron symptoms, it’s not been a fun week.

I had my booster but only 5 days before exposure to the virus so it was not yet effective.

Has anyone else experienced thyroid pain on top of covid symptoms when ill? Or with any other illness? Omicron starts with a sore throat for many people including me, but then it went away but I was left with a feeling of a lump when I swallow exactly where my thyroid is. It’s something different to a regular sore throat feeling. That died down too but the annoying thing about this virus is it feels like you’re getting better then you wake up and feel terrible again. My thyroid now really hurts again and the lump in the throat is back.

Do people get this with covid or other illnesses and do you usually notify GP or just wait it out with paracetamol? I’m on 75mcg levothyroxine and due another blood test but obviously going to wait a bit till I’m out of isolation and also properly recovered.

It's annoying that there seems to be little/no guidance from medics when you contract covid whatever the variant. There's plenty for vaccination!

So I'd suggest a natural approach such as vitamin C to bowel tolerance eg 1-3 g/dy.

I do get this Buffstera, pain like a lump in my throat. When I was 16 I mentioned it to my GP who referred me to a surgeon who took out my tonsils. The lump and pain remained, coming and going, and usually worse with any kind of upper respiratory infection other than a simple cold, but I have never risked mentioning it again! Yours might be something different from mine though so perhaps you ought to mention it to your GP. It will e interesting to see what others say.

Interesting, my GP was not interested because I don’t have a visible goitre but I’m surprised (also unsurprised) that there seems to be little out there on how viruses affect thyroid patients. There’s a lot saying that hypothyroidism won’t make covid worse, not too much on what covid will do to existing hypothyroidism

Doctor tried to tell me that the lump was my tonsils until I explained that I don’t have any tonsils. So we’re going to test bloods on Thursday or Friday when I’m out of isolation

Is there any hope?!! Just joking, our GPs are very clever really, but things like that do make me laugh. Working in a hospital I once had a request for repayment from a hospital purporting to have given one of our patients an emergency hysterectomy while in their area. I politely pointed out that we wouldn't be paying the invoice because the patient concerned was a male!

I hope you feel better soon. It is worth checking your Vit D and C levels, and Zinc. Zinc seems to be mentioned lately in getting over any one of the Covids.

Give yourself time to get better and treat yourself - whatever you fancy will do you good!

Hi Buffstera, I just got Omicron two days past and my thyroid hurts a whole lot. I do not get this same feeling with a regular flu or cold, I agree that regular sore throat is different.I experienced a hyper bout after my second vaccine, and I'm concerned about long term thyroid issues post Covid.

I really hope you feel better soon, fingers crossed it’s short duration. All the info out there seems to be about thyroid issues not making covid worse, given we know covid does random things and has strange effects on all parts of the body I don’t think it’s a leap to assume it might impact the thyroid too. Thanks all - I’m already on vitamin D, E, K, Boron, B12 shots, Folate, Zinc, Selenium, coq10, DHEA, melatonin at night and magnesium so I’m covered supplement wise 😅

All the covid symptoms have gone now but my neck is even more sore and the lump when I swallow is even more noticeable. I’m exhausted and my voice is croaky. Blood test was yesterday but I’m guessing they’ll only do TSH. Hoping for results end next week.

Hey, how are you feeling and and is the feeling of a lump still there?

I caught covid (omicron) in early December and have the exact same issue. I am fully recovered and healthy but within days of catching Covid I too also developed this feeling of a lump like or swollen gland that hurt a little when I touch, move my neck or Adam apple on the right top corner of my Adam apple. I cannot visibly see anything abnormal from the outside nor inside my mouth but the issue is there based on how it feels. I have fully recovered from covid since late December but this feeling hasn't left.

I have never had any throat issues except from acid reflux which I have control of by being careful about what I eat and when.

I am really scared about this and hope covid hasn't caused anything serious. There isn't much information out there about covid leaving certain individuals with a lump like feeling in the neck just above the Adam apple on one side. When I Google it it keeps bringing up the big bad C and that for me is the worst you could get in this life.

I am trying to book a GP appointment to check what is wrong and hopefully do some test to make sure the worst isn't in the picture. Sadly even to book an appointment these days it is rather complex online. I really dislike the times we living in.

I have been drinking green tea and taking all type os supplements to help with inflammations but that lump feeling and pain is still just sitting there not going anywhere. We already heading towards the end of Jan and this feeling and pain hasn't left me since mid December. I am scared and frustrated by this. Makes me realise how fragile our life is.

I’m sorry you’re feeling so rough still, the symptoms do drag on but I don’t think there is anything to be scared about.

I had a scan and my thyroid was fine, but there were a couple of inflamed lymph nodes where my body was still clearing out the virus.

It took about a month but I’m almost back to normal now and have increased my thyroid medication too so no longer getting thyroid or covid symptoms to anywhere near the same extent. Only very slight feeling of lump in the morning.

Speaking to your gp and getting an ultrasound scan should reassure you so I think you’re doing the right thing. Good luck!

I am glad you are much better. It is interesting that there isn't much mention of this being likely to happen for some of us. I do wonder if your lymph nodes will eventually return to normal or if this feeling of a lump will stay for good?

It is very reassuring to read that it isn't anything life threatening in your case.

I am definitely going to try my best to convince my GP to make sure I get some scan done and have it checked properly.

That thing hurts sometime more than other time but if I am busy at work I don't notice it as much as when I am home in the morning or before bed. It can feel uncomfortable.

Thank you so much for your post on this as I was looking everywhere online and could not find anything that sounded directly like what I am experiencing until I came accross your post. It was like reading exactly what I am dealing with through someone elses word.
