Grateful beyond words

I just wanted to thank everyone here who has advised or supported me so far on this journey. I saw a GP from the ThyroidUK list today and have been prescribed Levo along with extra vitamins and iron. She also recommended an ultrasound scan of my thyroid and getting my oestrogen level checked.

I’m still learning about this horrible disease, and this forum is worth its weight in gold for that.

I am sooooooo pleased for you. You deserve this after all you have been through and despite the horrendous negligence of the NHS.. Doing a happy dance for you and here's to you as you set off at the beginning of the road that leads to getting your life (and sanity) back.

Well done

How much levothyroxine are you starting on

Standard starter dose of levothyroxine is 50mcg unless over 65 years old

Unless you know/suspect lactose intolerance, best to avoid Teva brand levothyroxine

Most easily available (and often most easily tolerated) are Mercury Pharma or Accord

Mercury Pharma make 25mcg, 50mcg and 100mcg tablets

Accord is also boxed as Almus via Boots, and Northstar 50mcg and 100mcg via Lloyds ....but Accord doesn’t make 25mcg tablets

beware 25mcg Northstar is Teva

List of different brands available in U.K.

Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose change or brand change in levothyroxine

Meanwhile working on improving very low B12, low ferritin, folate and vitamin D will also help improve symptoms

Thank you, SlowDragon. It’s a tiny dose to begin with: 25mcg (which is the only thing that worries me a little). I’ve already started supplementing D3, B12, and C, and the consultant has also prescribed Selenium and Iron. I also have to organise a test for my oestrogen level as she suspects that will be extremely low, and a thyroid ultrasound. I have already arranged repeat blood tests for six weeks time, and have a follow up appointment in 8 weeks. I’m not gluten or lactose intolerant and my Levo is being supplied on private prescription from one of the online pharmacies on ThyroidUK’s list.

Thank you. I know I wouldn’t be any further forward than I was a year ago if it weren’t for all the help here.
