The chemist is giving my son his 125m levo in packs all in boxes of 25s is this ok? He’s on MP and was getting pack of 100 and another pack in 25mg but now chemist has changed it. He is concerned that taking his daily dose like this could be a problem. Also His blood test said he has Very low calcium and his vitamin D was so low his Dr gave him high dose capsules to take. Will the vit D increase his calcium? Please would you be able to give me advice to help him, he’s got autoimmune thyroid and only been on meds a few months. Thank you

It's the same brand so there should be no problem. There wont be any difference in excipients, just maybe by taking 5 x 25mcg he may be taking very slightly more excipients than taking 1 x 100mcg and 1 x 25mcg. I doubt he'll notice any difference. I expect there may be a temporary shortage of the 100mcg tablets and at least the pharmacy is sticking to the same brand.

His blood test said he has Very low calcium and his vitamin D was so low his Dr gave him high dose capsules to take. Will the vit D increase his calcium?

Taking Vit D aids absorption of calcium from food so his calcium level may increase. Retesting both Vit D and calcium in 3 months would be a good idea so he should arrange this with his GP.

What was his Vit D level and what dose has he been prescribed?

He should take his Vit D 4 hours away from his thyroid meds. Also, because it is fat soluble it needs to be taken with some dietary fat, maybe the fattiest meal of the day or some cheese or a full fat yogurt, etc.

Because of the extra uptake of calcium the Vit D supplement will produce, the calcium needs directing to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissues where it can be deposited and cause problems. Supplementing with Vit K2-MK7 does this job. This is not something many doctors are aware of, it's not something than will be tested, and it is something that he will have to buy himself. For Vit K2-MK7 I like Vitabay or Vegavero brands which contain the correct form of K2-MK7 - the "All Trans" form rather than the "Cis" form. The All Trans form is the bioactive form, a bit like methylfolate is the bioactive form of folic acid. Again, Vit K2-MK7 is a fat soluble vitamin and needs fat to be absorbed. It should be taken at a different time to the Vit D as they will compete for the fat for absorption.

Also, magnesium is another important cofactor of Vit D supplements as this helps the body convert the Vit D into it's usable form. Magnesium comes in different forms, check to see which would suit best and as it's calming it's best taken in the evening, four hours away from thyroid meds if taking magnesium as tablets/capsules, no necessity if using topical forms of magnesium.

My pharmacy recently did the same my 75 mcg was dispensed in 3 x 25mcg boxes instead of 50 and 25.He added a hand written note to my medication stating there was a shortage of 50mcg and was dispensing it this way as he knew I do not tolerate certain brands and it was for consistency.

I have been fine taking it this way

I was impressed that he wrote the note to explain .

That's really strange because my pharmacist can't get 25mcg MP for love nor money. I have emailed Advanz twice and rung them and left a message and no one has got back to me . I may have to badger them tomorrow !

I'm in the NW of England, my pharmacy are really good at getting me what I need but they have contacted all their suppliers and they can't seem to get 25mcg tabs. I'll have to get on to the manufacturers tomorrow. Luckily I have a stash because I bought some levo one the counter when I was abroad so I'll not run out. Thanks for replying .:)
