Sore throat

I keep getting a sore throat in the night/morning when I wake up.

Do I recall something about post nasal drip being connected to hypothyroidism? But if it's this would I have other symptoms?

Any ideas/advice gratefully received!

I find Sterimar nasal spray really useful; it was recommended here following a previous post I made. It’s pure water, so no chemicals. Best wishes to you.

If the sore throat gets better once you are up and about but returns overnight it could be that you are breathing through your mouth in your sleep, which can cause these symptoms

In a way I hope so because it should be easy to resolve. :)

I don't know either. I sometimes wake myself up snoring so when I settle down to sleep I lie on my side with a pillow under my chin to keep my mouth shut - but then of course I move in the night. Sounds as if we need to be bound up! Mobcaps???! 😀

Sounds like it might be laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) also known as silent reflux. It is quite common and due to refluxing stomach acid and pepsin during your sleep and/ or pepsin being refluxed as an aspirate in the gas when one burps. The pepsin can get into the larynx, nose, middle ear etc and cause symptoms like post nasal drip, sore throat, ear popping, pain and other symptoms. I developed this a few months after starting Levo. It is likely due to low stomach acid from being hypo thyroid. Low stomach acid as well as poor stomach motor complexes can then lead to overgrowth of bacteria or fungus in the small intestine. I find I burp a lot when I eat carbs, especially high fibre carbs like beans because the microbes ferment it in the small intestine and produce gas. I think because the gas is produced from beneath the stomach acid as opposed to just entering the stomach like when you swallow air or drink fizzy drinks, it collects some of the stuff in your stomach Acid, like Pepsin, on the way out.
