Sore Throat

I have been Hypo’ for 10 years and this is new to me. Does anyone have a sore throat that comes and goes or appears after talking a lot?(I am a tutor). Is it a sign of too little or too much Levothyroxine? Looking forward to your thoughts. Thanks.

I often have sore throats - I have one today - early morning, and sometimes disappears as the day wears on. Sometimes it stays. It doesn't seem to matter whether I'm under or over-medicated.

Yes, on and off. When I was quite undermedicated I would feel like I'm having a cold at least once or twice a month. Seems to be better with meds for me personally.

Suggests under medicated

When were thyroid and vitamin levels last tested?

Do you always get same brand of levothyroxine

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

Ask GP to test vitamin levels

You may need to get full Thyroid testing privately as NHS refuses to test TG antibodies if TPO antibodies are negative

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

Yes I have one now. Only been diagnosed a couple of months but have had sore throats for many years. Doctors put it down to dodgy tonsils and tried to give me endless antibiotics. Now I realise it’s probably being hashi’s. My voice can go a bit funny too out of the blue when talking and I feel like constantly needing to clear my throat. I just suddenly start to lose my voice. Just for a while and it’s back again like nothing ever happened! I believe it may well be a sign of being under medicated. Not expert enough to know if an ultrasound Would be useful for you.

It’s worth checking it’s not this weather as hay fever can also play a massive part in sore throats. But if you’ve had them outside of this season then I doubt it.
