Vitamin D

Hi, I've just had my vitamin D results back.

79 (50 - 140)

Is there an optimal level I should be trying to reach?

And if I need supplements, which ones are good and what dosage should I be going for?

Thanks in advance for advice/help!

Polly.

75 - 95 is good, I am under one of the best rheumatologists in the world and he likes his patients to have a reading of at least 75, my last result was 100, what dose are you on? MaryF

Ideally you should get to around 100 up to 150. (100 is what thyroid.org.uk recommend for those with thyroid disorders.)

You need about 2,500IU per day to get there. (You can take 5,000IU every other day) Solgar are a good brand or you can go into your local independent pharmacy and see what they have there. Check they don't contain soya oil.

You also do have approximately another month where you can make vitamin D through the sun as well if you live in the UK or elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere. Obviously this depends on the weather.

Thanks for the advice. I can't get any sun right now as I am bed bound (broken legs)

I'll get the supplements. Thanks.

Since you have broken legs make sure you take the K2 SeasideSusie recommends and also get some magnesium citrate as well.

Pollyerrington I've always liked Doctor's Best Vitamin D3. It contains only two ingredients in a small softgel - D3 and extra virgin olive oil. This is the best value I have found bodykind.com/product/2463-B... and you could take it on alternate days as Bluebug has suggested. Take with dietary fat, the fattiest meal of the day would be fine.

Did you know that you should take K2-MK7 when taking Vit D? Vit D aids the absorption of calcium from food and K2 directs it to bones and teeth rather than arteries and soft tissues. It's also recommended to supplement with magnesium (another cofactor) when taking Vit D, most of us need it anyway.

Not what you're looking for?
