Thyroid impact after hysterectomy?
Hi I had a hysterectomy at aged 33 - ovaries left intact - never been right since. I found out down the line that the fibroids growing attached to my womb would have shrivelled up if I had had enough progesterone in my body. That was 38 years ago (1983) - if only I had known then what I know now. I suffered afterwards with me producing milk from my breasts and ended up with mastitis and ageing overnight. 18 months down the line was prescribed HRT which I will always be grateful for - I got my life back - but taking that for so long did cause problems with the thyroid which was probably already spluttering down the line.
I have never connected the two things before, but I also had a hysterectomy with ovaries intact, but didn’t feel well afterwards. Eventually I was put on HRT which helped, then tested as early menopause and hypothyroidism ( age 35) When my Gp was away on leave the female Dr I saw refused to continue with the HRT, and I then went through a long a stressful menopause.
She was wrong - I felt so well again - I felt very well pregnant and very well on the pill afterwards for years and then very well with the HRT - which I think went to show I had a hormonal problem somewhere - what I didn't realise it was coming from the adrenal glands. The sex hormones include oestrogen and progesterone etc. etc. - I think the adrenals were under par because they were helping the thyroid - however, I found out that HRT downgrades and suppresses thyroid hormone but I had no thyroid symptoms until I hit 50 when the ovaries started to downgrade production of oestrogen and it is not that well known but the adrenal glands are the glands that are supposed to then supply the bit of oestrogen needed after the menopause. Anyone who says they had no problems with the menopause - I just think to myself - lucky you - good adrenal glands. I was always tired as a child and anaemic and growing pains so something going on - feeling well pregnant etc. to me shows something been going on for a long long time even in childhood.
I had uterine fibroids and adding progesterone did nothing for them. It's why I just had mine. I think at the age you had yours, they should've done a myectomy instead. That's young to go through that, and you were obviously still fertile. I'm sorry for all you went through. Could you tell me more about the thyroid issues HRT caused you, and how you got it back under control?
I had hysterectomy but ovaries were left. Few years later went on HRT. Felt really good. When I got to 65 they took them off me and still have occasional hot flushes now.
