HRT and impact on Thyroid question

Good Morning,

Does anyone know of any impact on Thyroid of taking HRT? Would HRT enhance / hinder conversion of free T4 to T3?

Would welcome any thoughts or direction toward research / resources to enable me to explore more fully.

Thank you in advance,

RobynSM

RobynSM,

Transdermal patches are unlikely to affect absorption of Levothyroxine but tablets may so you should take tablets at least 4 hours away from Levothyroxine.

Thanks Clutter (I am in the process of switching from levo to NDT and have just been given an HRT prescription for patch... wondering what / if there is any impact on thyroid (conversion of T4 to T3 specifically).

RobynSM,

No that I'm aware of. If there was the T3 in NDT would overcome any reduction in conversion.

Have you been warned about the possible dangers of blood clots due to HRT?

many people when they are estrogen dominant start having thyroid problems I keep reading because estrogen block the thyroid ....you can google about it...that's why they say it is common for women who are entering menopause to be diagnosed w thyroid disruption....

Hi

I'm a newbie on here via a recommendation.

I had a full hysterectomy last year so was plunged into a surgical menopause over night. So due to my age (44) was given HRT. I've had an under active thyroid for 20 years and has always been controlled well by the usual medication. However, since my surgery my levels are varing to such a degree with random off the scale readings.

So I am wondering if it is due to the HRT... I am due yet another blood test next week, and should that show up more irregular readings I will be put under a consultant. I will keep you posted......

I have recently found out from my sister, who has a goitre, and was advised to have it removed by her specialist. She refused this because of what happened to me when I had mine removed. She tried acupuncture to try and reduce the swelling which had minimal impact, but recently went onto HRT for her menopause (she's 53) and remarkably her goitre has reduced down to normal size. I wish I had known this 14 years ago ........

Fantastic. Is your sister also on Thyroid meds. If so what type and also what type of hrt, patch or pill etc. Just asking for my sister in-law who has a huge goitre and is on thyroxine and about to start hrt at 53

Thanks

My sister has a functioning thyroid so doesn't need any thyroxine. She had developed a large goitre and didn't want to have an operation to have it removed. She tried alternative remedies including acupuncture to no avail. She has started HRT combined oestrogen and progesterone pills for menopause and the goitre literally has reduced down to nothing. The consultant wont commit to saying that the HRT has helped but does say that the majority of their patients are menopausal women.

If only I had know this I would have tried it before having mine removed, as life after its gone is never the same again
