New batch of Armour is dreadful!!!

I have recently just received my second batch of armour prescribed by Country health but from a different pharmacy. The first lot I got was significant in turning my health around alongside dietary changes etc, almost complete cessation of all symptoms. I have just received my second lot of armour from smartway Pharmacy and upon my first ingestion of it, I could tell something was right. Within the first hour of taking it I have developed nausea, unclear thinking, dizziness, shortness of breath etc. I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar? Does anyone understand why this is happening? And finally does anyone have any words of advice where to go from here?

After taking this new batch for 5 days and it making me ill for 4 or 5 hours everytime I take it, I have decided to stop taking it tomorrow and will take some of the synthetic stuff Euthyrox as temporarily in Turkey. Please HELP!

Are you taking the prescription yourself to a pharmacy or does Country Health provide the Armour themselves and are using a different pharmacy this time?

Drewbs, Just a random thought... have you checked that the new tablets are the same dose as the previous ones? e.g. if you previously took 1 grain tablets, might the new pharmacy have given you two grain tablets by mistake?

What is the batch reference and sell-by-date?

That’s a strange reaction. Almost like an allergic reaction. I think the first thing I’d do is query what you’ve been sent with the staff at Smartway Pharmacy. Was the pot sealed? Does it look legit—the container? What’s the batch number/expiry date?

Those symptoms sound to me as if it's not Armour at all. I wonder what is in it. Definitely stop taking it in my opinion.

I hope you've reported it back to the pharmacy and to Country Health. They may have had other people complaining about it too.

I’m not always a fan of STTM—some of what they present as fact can be iffy occasionally.

But this blog seems pertinent—have a read and see what you think: stopthethyroidmadness.com/2...

That blog makes me think of something else.

The Armour I've had is produced in 100 tablet containers. If your prescription is for a number of tablets which is not 100 or a multiple of 100, then the pharmacy have to count out what you've asked for and repackage it. Might or might not have batch number and expiry date also. Also what do they do with the left over tablets?

Could there have been a muddle there, so that you are not getting Armour?

Next thought - I think someone keeps a list of tablets and what they look like. Is it one of our administrators??

Isn't that the craziest thing? Two years ago I opened a package of T4 and found a bunch of tablets all clipped - some leafs had 3-5 tablets, others even 2. I was so shocked I called the pharmacy as I thought the package had been tampered with. Turns out they don't give prescriptions in the same amount as are in the packages and often have to cut some tablets off the leaf. How dumb is that?

Yes, doctors often prescribe the amount needed for a month or two. I've persuaded my doctor to give me prescriptions in 100s rather than months.

I've had a pharmacy round the prescribed amount up so that they don't have leftover tablets; I paid the full price, but it was much more sensible.

Others insist on sticking to the exact wording on the prescription, so when I asked for a quote when I was taking 1 and a half grains per day they would only quote for 1.5grain tablets which was no use to me as I split my dose - and anyway the 1.5 grain tablets are much more expensive - which they would have known.

Can’t you get German NDT from Country Health? It might be worth telling them the problem and trying the German apothecary NDT instead. It has a lower proportion of T3 than Armour. I did look into Country Health when I thought it might become impossible to obtain NDT. Good to know you got a good result with them initially. I have used ThyroidS for around 7 years and find it very effective.

My understanding of bovine thyroid hormones is that these can vary -- as the natural source makes it hard to get consistent amounts. In addition to my levothyroxine from the NHS -- I have a private prescription of compounded T3 (liothyronine) from Roseway Labs, London -- because I don't want to risk the fluctuating dosages with Armour or Erfa. Good luck.

Armour is not bovine - it is porcine.

Yes, of course, the thyroid glands used are not themselves consistent. But there are series of processes which assay and blend to achieve consistency (at least, adequately consistent as far as the specifications require).

Do bear in mind that, at last over my experience of thyroid medicine, there have been more recalls and issues with levothyroxine than with desiccated thyroid. (In the recent past desiccated thyroid has been hard hit but that seems to be due to moved goalposts as the FDA have changed their requirements.)

Hi - just wondering if you’ve got this sorted as I’m using Smartway for the first time and having real problems with them - not even got the pills yet!
