Last year I posted a photo of three Thyroid-S tablets from different batches, at a time when there was a lot of discussion about variations between batches, their different colours and strengths. Having just started a new batch I thought I'd do the same. This photo shows TA21089 and 23T01002. When I first tried the new batch three days ago I was certain it was a smaller tablet and tasted chalkier than the old batch, which was slightly sweet. Today they look and taste the same, perhaps I've just stopped worrying about them! In the comments I'll post last year's photo. If anyone has any that look different from these I'd be interested to know, I'd also like to know what people think of the batches they're currently taking, both good and bad. Thanks!

Comparison Between Two Batches of Thyroid-S
Here is the photo from last year showing batches from 2015, 2016 and 2021, all of which I took and were fine.
Don’t they look very different? The one to the right looks shinier to me, and all three are differently coloured?
Yes they do all look different and the newer batches are shinier than the older batches. I was trying to point out that there have always been some variations in their appearance, but that all of those I showed were batches which I had taken and had done well on, despite them looking slightly different. There had been some discussion at the time about tablets which looked green and I was hoping someone post a photo of one.
This wasn't to detract from the fact that some recent batches had obviously been very different in terms of potency. I was lucky not to have had any of those, but I do sometimes need to adjust my dose by a quarter grain up or down.
I suspect that my current batch (TA22055) is not as strong as the previous one as I have had to up my dose by half a tablet. Of course it could just be me needing a bit more.
I never notice any difference in batches, so I'm obviously not as sensitive to these things. The thing i do worry about is how they've been stored by your supplier since production (and can you be sure you've been supplied with the genuine product? so much fakery in pharmaceuticals).
Years ago when my supply used to come in small foil packets i was thoughtless and kept them on top of chest by the bed, in new flat. Gradually went downhill, and didn't understand why. Until i realised one day that the chest top, by a large window , was in full sun for the middle of the day, and the packet of Thyroid-S was actually hot. So that had reduced its efficacy. I had to switch to a new batch, and have been careful about storage ever since.
Like you, I've never had a reaction such that I had to stop taking them, but I have noticed small variations, where I'd take an extra quarter grain, or lower by a quarter grain. Do you swallow or chew the tablets?
I've just learned a similar lesson to you! I take 3.25 grains a day and leave the extra quarters in the pill splitter, next to the dark bottle I decant the Thyroid-S into, on an inside shelf. It's always been fine until the last couple of weeks when I realised it was so hot and humid that the quarters were crumbling and probably ineffective. I'm now putting them in an air-tight container, which I should have done from the start.
Edited to add that I now buy direct and they usually arrive within 7 days. I used to buy them in the foil packs from somewhere else, and did wonder how they'd been stored.
Hey there :
I'm way behind the curve and having discarded both 21060 and 22012 in the past 6 months am now settled on 22054 and back to my ' normal ' -
I'm with Graves post RAI thyroid ablation 2005 :
Thanks for this, but how annoying to have to ditch two batches. The comments I had found on 21060 was that it was fine and also that it was possibly weaker than usual. There were a few complaints about 22012, a few people reported that it was fine and one that she felt better on it than she had on a previous batch. It's crazy! Do you chew them or swallow them? There have been no reports about 22054 so I'll ask helvella to add your comment to the chart.
I have already given Helvella feedback -
looking at the feedback and the limited information on actual ratios within certain batches - it does seem 22054 is at least true to the ' unique T3/T4 ratio ' that is meant to be ' protected and maintained ' throughout production.
I do not have a thyroid - RAI thyroid ablation for Graves 2005 - so presume with no thyroid function of my own - I'm probably more sensitive to even subtle changes as totally reliant on thyroid hormone replacement medication.
i did contact my supplier but as expected there was no answer but for what it's worth did confirm that there had been no recalls on the 2 batches I found lacking.
I swallow my Thyroid S with a glass of water at around 2/3 am initially trying to follow the circadian rhythm of the body and now 6 years on as my bladder now dictates !! - so on an empty stomach, and hours before I get up at around 6/7 am.
I was thinking of 22054 because I hadn't recorded any comments Yes that batch was a good ratio, some are a bit too different for my liking. I'm also wondering if it's those without a thyroid who are having a greater problem with the batches. Please tell me do you swallow or chew them? Ever since the problems with Armour in 2009 I chew mine, and I wonder if that makes a difference too.
I haven't yet not had a reply to any of my questions from my supplier, but I do wish they'd be more open about ingredients and even the tiniest change in formulation. Meanwhile my husband takes a small pharmacy's worth of medication every day, full of different batches, different manufacturers etc., and never notices a difference in them and thinks me fussy for checking them each time.
Sorry I added onto my previous post regarding method of taking and we must have flown over each other at around Heathrow Airport.
Thank you! I wonder how much of a difference swallowing as opposed to chewing might make. I'm sure they altered the coating in about 2020, when they restarted manufacture after a lull.
I've no idea but having struggled for 6 months trying to adjust to both those batches mentioned - I was anxious when I tried 22054 as this was my last hope of which I had 2 bottles - I took my 1 + 1/2 grains as normal at around 2/3 in the morning and was woken up 2/3 hours later warmer and with no strange headache and back in the room :
So hopefully I've enough for a while and I follow this thread with great interest and thank you for sharing your concerns and being ' fussy ' :
Just because I had been taking thyroid s everyday for over seven years I noticed the difference at TA22 batch straight away. They are now all shiny and after trying three new batches they do not cut into quarters now. Most importantly they don't work for me. It's hard to see online from a picture. I know that they are a different colour too. They did look beige now all three look greenish. Sometimes the old ones varied in strength but only by one quarter. Thank you for posting. They have changed but how and why is any body's guess. I am now trying Metavive.
Thank you Brightness, I think of you every time I start a new batch now! I can still cut mine into quarters, my last batch was 21089 and latest is 23T01002. I use a pill splitter and it cuts them cleanly. I think the latest ones, 2023, are very slightly smaller and less deep than the previous ones, 2021, but I have been told they're the same. They aren't shinier but are very slightly darker, but definitely no hint of green, and I've noticed slight variations with other batches in the past. When you took them did you swallow them or chew them?
I messaged you 11 months ago to tell you who I buy from but I don't think you saw it. Please would you let me know by PM where you used to buy yours from? I'd also love to know how you get on with Metavive, I've heard varying reports about it.
I’m currently on batch TA22057 and prior to that on TA22024 - apart from huge hike in prices, don’t see or feel a lot of difference. I chew mine at around 7am and they have the same sweet flavour. I take 2 and a half grains per day.
Thank you for letting me know this. I'm beginning to think that the differences people are finding correspond with whether they swallow or chew the tablets. That they're not completely absorbed when swallowed, as happened when Armour reformulated in 2009. I think this could certainly be one cause, apart from the obviously really odd batches which are sometimes sold.
I only ever purchased one bottle of Thyroid S, at the time I had serious insomnia taking it, so stopped it fairly quickly, but I kept them regardless, fortunately for me, as I now take 1 grain a day with my T4 and T3, it keeps me warmer for longer and helps with puffy face and also helps my eyes. I think I can tolerate it a bit better now because my metabolism is a bit better overall.
The batch I have is old it's TA20091. It splits into quarters easily.
I discovered early on that I have to chew it. It has a sort of hard coating (pills are light beige) that seems to prevent it being absorbed quickly, unlike Armour or NP.
If I swallow whole, I've had the experience of taking it at say 7 am then feeling myself starting to warm up and heat beat speeding up in the afternoon or correspondingly taking in afternoon and feeling it kicking in at bedtime. Big delay. So I chew it first. This might not be relevant to more recent batches however.
I also likely have a compromised gut so that might be why there's such a delay with these.
Alanna thanks for telling me this and I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply, I've been in bed for two weeks with a wretched flu-type virus.
I've also chewed all the NDTs I've taken since Armour reformulated in 2009 and a lot of people became worse on it. The theory was that it's more evenly absorbed that way, especially as Armour had had more cellulose added in the new batches which prevented some people absorbing it easily if they swallowed it. I wasn't keen on the idea of a time-release coating on Thyroid-S and think your experience of feeling hotter a few hours after swallowing bears that out and is probably due to the coating. It doesn't sound at all pleasant, and also shows that the coating was always a possible problem for some, and that it's not just been in the last year.
It's also interesting that you mention insomnia. I have heard that from a few people, but for me it seems to help me sleep but I would have different dreams if I took it late at night.
Good luck with taking it with T4 and T3, that sounds the best of all worlds!
