Best iron supplement: Hi I'm going to start... - Thyroid UK
Best iron supplement
So, what were the results from the iron panel? My ferritin was 72 on my last blood test, which I think is borderline ok, could be better, and without an iron panel the advice was to eat iron rich foods.
My ferritin dropped now to 79 so big drop
I know very little about iron deficiency. Im only replying because no one else has. From reading on here this advice is generally given:
Optimal results are :
Serum iron : 55% - 70% of the way through the range, lower end for women.
TIBC : roughly mid-range Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) or Transferrin: Low in range indicates lack of capacity for additional iron, High in range indicates body's need for supplemental iron
Saturation : optimal is 35 to 45% : higher end for men
Ferritin : People on the forum usually like ferritin to be roughly mid-range
Ferritin below 30 suggests iron deficiency
Hi, we are all different and my story of symptoms is somewhat complicated and I don't have my exact readings to hand. I just know that back in 2017 I went into my local health food shop to buy a supplement as I was feeling so tired etc etc. The manageress recognised that my breathlessness was probably due to low ferritin. I'd never heard of ferritin.
Long story short I didn't buy what I went in for but the iron supplement she recommended - 4 weeks later I had a ferritin test (it had never been offered to me before) - it was 70 - I understood the range was between 30 up to 300. But within a couple of weeks I felt much better, could breath much better, walk faster and slept better. The following year my reading was 130 - I've been taking it since - except now I don't take it on days that I know I'll be eating iron rich foods. I don't work for the company and thought we were not allowed to advertise but I do find this supplement to be very good - It's 'Easy Iron 20mg - complex' 100% vegan and is NON-constipating. Made by Terra Nova. I can vouch for the fact that it is indeed non-constipating.
FYI - By the way on the mannitol trail - I've discovered that Boots own brand Vit B12 contains mannitol.
Thank You I'll have a look at the Easy iron atm I'm on ferrous sulphate 2 tablet 2 to 3 times a day for now I'll drop it down after testing that iron levels have increased I dont always just go by ferritin now I paid for a serum iron panel which showed low iron but ferritin was quite high at the time I checked with Endo first and he said your low end range iron which I knew anyway havent a clue why my ferritin was so high with out supplements or iron rich foods but it's gone right down to 77 might be adding to this awful fatigued n hairloss I've had
Our bodies are 'funny' eh? I told the health food lady that I wasn't anaemic - she replied that the acute breathlessness (i.e. I couldn't finish a sentence without taking a breath) could be indicative of low ferritin levels. As I said I hadn't heard of ferritin before although/despite the fact that every pregnant woman is tested for it. I just wonder why my own GP hadn't thought to get it tested after my numerous visits. The same practice (different doctor) offered my male neighbour a ferritin test during their exploration of his condition - he was pre-diabetic. Good luck - any other iron supplements that I'd taken over the years have always led to constipation, the liquid iron 'Spa' didn't but neither did it improve my wellbeing.
