I have many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism and requested blood tests from my GP. The tests came back 'normal' though the Gp has asked to see me this week to discuss my symptoms. My results are detialed below though I don't see any specific tests for hypothyroidism. Would I expect hypo to show up in the full blood count I have had?Maybe my own assesment was wildly wrong or could there have been something missed? Any help welcome.
White Blood Count 6
Red Cell Count 4.75
Haemoglobin 151
Haematocrit 0.452
Mean Cell Volume 95.2
MCH 31.8
Platelet Count 276
Neutrophils 3.4
Lymphocytes 1.7
Monocytes 0.6
Eosinophils 0.28
Basophils 0.1
Nucleated RBC 0

There are no thyroid tests there, thyroid tests are
TSH
FT4
FT3
Thyroid antibodies
The most likely only test you will get from that list is TSH, if that is abnormal you may get FT4 tested. Presumably you didn't do the private test recommended when you last posted which would include the full thyroid and vitamin panel.
Unfortunately we can interpret the results you have posted without their reference ranges. If you have a print out of your results then they will be on there so if you can add them we should be able to help you further.
Thanks Susie. Having explained my symptoms to the GP she said she would order tests for thyroid issues though doesn't appear to have done so. The ranges are on the print out though my results on almost every test listed is in the mid range. Perhaps I should just take your advice and do the private test myself prior to seeing the GP?
You should certainly ask GP how on earth she expected to be able to assess your thyroid function from those tests. Hypothyroidism wouldn't affect any of them, or show up on any of them.
If you discussed symptoms of hypothyroidism with her , then a TSH would be what was needed ( at the very least ) ideally an fT4 too , but the lab sometimes won't do that if TSH is in range.
You could always check your thyroid bloods privately using Medichecks or similar if you get no joy from your GP. Many links in this forum on how to do this. I always test privately, then post results on this forum for advice; far more empowering than waiting for my surgery’s help!
I took my private tests to show GP (who was initially reluctant to do them) & this ‘proof’ spurred them into action getting full NHS bloods as a check and an endo referral
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies
Ask GP to test vitamin levels and thyroid including thyroid antibodies
Or test privately
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins
