Question about Teva

Hello, I’ve recently joined and I posted last week regarding my blood test results and received some very helpful advice - thank you! I feel, 15 years after diagnosis (Hypothyroidism), that I’m only just starting to investigate why I might not feel as well as I could and what I can do about it. On the back of advice received I’ve ordered ‘Magnesium Plus’ which has Vit C and B vits too, which I will take at night and a Vit D and K2 spray which I plan to take at lunch.

On reading around this site I notice that feeling well can also be affected by the brand of Thyroxine taken in addition to obviously having TSH, T3, T4 and vits at optimum levels. I had never even considered this before! I know that my brand of Thyroxine is currently Teva 100mcg and Wockhardt 25mcg. Previously I have had the orange box which when googled is actavis and I have found some old accord strips, which I think used to be actavis(?)

I’m still working on getting my Thyroxine levels right. Upped to 125mcg on alternate days with 100mcg 2 weeks ago, and initially felt ‘brighter’ but now feel no different from before… Due to test again around 12th June. Will also be starting vitamins soon too. I’m wondering whether I can request a change back to accord, or go to another pharmacy when I’m next due my prescription. I am paying more attention to how I feel and I mostly feel tired, ‘foggy’ headed, cold, achy hips and legs and occasionally a bit anxious about nothing in particular! Is it possible Teva could be contributing to these symptoms? Thank you all again for all the insightful advice, and the new information I’m learning.

Teva causes problems for many members, and different people can experience different side effects. It would seem that it's likely to be the mannitol they use instead of lactose that causes problems.

It used to be Actavis, it's now Accord. The manufacturer says nothing has changed, some members have noticed a difference, some haven't. I think the manufacturer said something about they get fillers from different places so it might be that which is causing some people problems, who knows, it's a conundrum!

Thank you SeasideSusie . I think, as I can't be sure if it's affecting symptoms or not that I'll work at getting my levels right - upping dose and monitoring that and starting vits and see how I go with that. I guess this might take some time! The other 'issue' I have is my absolute inability to lose weight. I seem to lose and then put on the same half stone throughout the year!

Low T3 makes weight loss difficult. What we need to do is get TSH down to 1 or below which gives the highest possible FT4. We test TSH, FT4 and FT3 together and if FT4 is high with a low FT3 then that means our conversion of T4 to T3 is low. If we divide FT4 by FT3 and look at the ratio, then generally less than 4:1 is OK but over that shows poor conversion, eg

Example A

TSH: 0.5 (0.2-4.2)

FT4: 20 (12-22)

FT3: 5.5 (3.1-6.8)

20/5.5 = 3.6:1

Conversion is good with those levels.

Example B

TSH: 0.5 (0.2-4.2)

FT4: 20 (12-22)

FT3: 4 (3.1-6.8)

20/4 = 5:1

Conversion is poor with those levels.

So if your levels showed poor conversion like Example B then you'd look at your nutrient levels. We need optimal nutrient levels for good conversion. If nutrient levels aren't optimal we address them. If nutrient levels are optimal then we're doing everything we can to aid conversion and still FT3 is low so adding T3 to Levo may be beneficial.

Recommend getting FULL thyroid and vitamin testing done minimum of 6-8 weeks after being on constant unchanging dose and brand of levothyroxine

Change back to Accord. And test 6-8 weeks later

Remember to stop taking any supplements that contain biotin a week before all blood tests
