T3 being stopped

Good morning,

After my thyroid was removed I was given thyroxine and I get really poorly and had severe M.E and was washed and fed for 6 years ...after fighting for 4 years my endocrinologist ( who makes me feel vulnerable, and is very flipent as to how all this is destroying my life ) gave me 700mg of thyroxine and my bloods were taken every 30 minutes for 4 hours and my T4 and T3 hadn’t changed from when they tested my levels before the test ..I obviously wasn’t converting or absorbing the thyroxine.

My life is still a daily struggle and uncomfortable but the T3 has shifted my health in a positive way and my blood results have increasd..

My endocrinologist called me 3 weeks ago and said he is stopping my T3. ....due to money and management at the top of the hospital, has told him to stop prescribing it...

I was hysterical and so scared so he said he would talk to his boss and call me back, but he said he’s not confident it will help...he’s calling me tomorrow with the outlook..

I did say to him that I felt I have a clinical need for T3 and it’s not fair to put me back to where I was before, with no life at all..He just said ,well these things happen, and it’s just life I’m afraid 😳

Is there anything I can do or say if he says it’s being stopped tomorrow?

Many thanks

Tanya

Have a look at this document which the NICE Guidelines links to and must be followed by NHS:

sps.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploa...

See Part 3.1.1 where it says ' The abrupt withdrawal of liothyronine therapy from patients who have been stabilised on treatment for hypothyroidism is inappropriate.'

However, you might need to start looking for another supply of T3 I guess - worth you doing private tests to see where your TSH, T4 and T3 are right now on the meds you're taking now.

Take your tests first thing and days away from any vitamins, and before you take your meds, 24 hours after your last t4 and about 12 hours after the last dose of T3.

The post your results with ranges here for further advice.

I’m so sorry you are suffering. I do feel there needs to be proper informed consent before a TT and they just don’t inform patients of the risk that some people are severely and chronically unwell after a TT. Even if it doesn’t happen very often, it needs to be disclosed. I’m not sure on T3 front. You can get private if you can afford or buy online (I can’t obviously recommend the latter).

Which CCG area are you in

You can search prescription rates here

openprescribing.net/analyse...

If you have clinical need of T3 it should be prescribed

How much T3 are you currently taking

Do you take levothyroxine alongside or just T3

Essential to regularly retest vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 levels

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Are you on strictly gluten free diet
