T4/T3

Thanks to the information and advice I’ve received from this site, I saw an endocrinologist on Thursday who agreed to trial me on t4/T3. He said to start with reducing thyroxine from 75 to 50 and 25 T3 in the morning and see how that goes. He’s writing to my gp to propose this so am now waiting to hear from gp. He said if that doesn’t help then to split T3 dosage during the day. Any comments/advice gladly welcomed 🙂

Personally I would not start at 25mcg .....most need to start low and slow.

Perhaps a week or two reducing T4 to only 50/75mcg alternate days and introduce 1/4 tablet in split dose waking and about 2pm

I actually started with 1/8th tablet twice a day for 3-4 days, before increasing to 1/4 tablet.

You can cut tablet with scalpel or craft knife pretty accurately

After 6 weeks at that my endo put T4 down a further 12.5mcg and upped the T3. I take in 3 split doses, 1/2 tablet at 6am, 1/4 tablet at noon and 6pm

Your TSH was a bit high on Blue Horizon test. Once you have got use to the addition of T3 you may need to put Levo back up.

Thanks, it’s all a bit complicated and tricky isn’t it?!

Better complicated and tricky than seriously ill due to over medication. 25mcg is ludicrous! IMHO. I agree with SlowDragon. Slow increase or you body will go into a shock.

Ok, yes I understand. Oh hell, I was so eager to get on it that I took one this morning with 50 mcg thyroxine. I’m a bit worried now, or will just the one time not affect me?

Our condition is quite an easy one once you know how to read your body. T3 is active so I would suggest dropping down to the recommended (by SlowDragon) dose. I would also say from my experience wait until your supps are optimal and your T4 mcg dose is in the 100s before adding the T3 as you’ll have a more accurate picture. But that’s one opinion and experience. Hopefully one of our more experienced ladies will have more information. Whatever you choose, tell your Endocrinologist- so he doesn’t adjust falsely at a later appointment.

Maybe do some research on it all. Hugs 🤗

Thank you. I’ve bought the stop the thyroid madness book but have to keep reading some chapters to get it to sink in and understand (brain fog)!

It’s a start. Yay, to you!

And re your 50mcg. It’s only a mistake if you don’t learn from it. 💜

Your way is very sensible and smart . Slow and Low is the way to go .

I was started on 20 mcg T3 with no advice to cut T4 for a while first. I only learned those things from this forum. Even so I increased a little too quickly and suffered for it. Slowly slowly is the key

In what way did you suffer?

You can become over medicated very quickly with T3 and the symptoms for me (anxiety - rapid heart beat amongst others) took a while to settle

T3 can make someone a very angry and negative personality .

Mollychops,

I would divide the 25mcg T3 into 2 doses and take the first 12.5mcg with your Levothyroxine and the second 12.5mcg at bedtime. It's normal for heart and pulse rate to rise within an hour or so of taking T3 and they should subside after another hour or so. If 25mcg feels to much at first reduce to 12.5mcg and increase to 18.75mcg after a week or two.

Thanks, I’ll give that a try tomorrow. Trial and error eh?!
