This tv programme is being shown tonight, 11.55pm bbc 1, Mon 18 Jan, and on iPlayer.

Interesting because at the end of the programme the question is asked: is it possible to exercise too much? The answer is yes, and cortisol and T3 are mentioned.

First time I’ve heard T3 mentioned other than on this forum!

Interesting, will check this out. I must confess I’m a running addict, and I do wonder sometimes if it makes my hypothyroidism worse. It also doesn’t seem to have any affect on my weight sadly!

Hi. If you run daily and this is what you do everyday then your body will think it’s just it’s normal. Hence the no weight loss. I am guilty of over exercising in the past and I’m not in anyway saying this is you, but, for me it affected my body hugely. I was doing 10 Les mills classes a week plus 8 hours of cardio a week and lifting weights 5 times a week. Looking back this was excessive and it definitely took its toll.

Hi. Yes it is true too much exercise is not good for the body. It can cause chronic fatigue and wear down the adrenals as well as affect the thyroid as the body is put under increasing amounts of exercise. Everything in moderation.

A half to an hour a day with one days rest is sufficient. I too have been guilty of over exercising mixed with over dosing. End result is weight gain and insomnia due to too much cortisol. A lot of the time though people eat back more calories than they burn. You’d be amazed how little calorie burn is, especially with cardio

I was going to post on here about that. The doctor had tested the cortisol levels and FT3 as well as other things to see what the impact was on exercising.

It was noted that the presenter had high cortisol and low FT3 levels.

The doctor said that the presenter needed to make sure she was fuelling her body properly before doing a lot of exercise.
