Hi, so I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's for almost 3 years now, I take 125mg of Levothyroxine. But over the past year and a half I have now been suffering from Alopecia Areata, 4 bald patches in total.
I am concerned it is linked to my thyroid, but my doctors just said it was due to stress.
Unfortunately I don't have any recent blood test results, but I am due one in about a weeks time.
Was wondering if anyone had any insight on this, or if anyone else has experienced this?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Jennifer

These recent posts by Dr Carrie Jones, ND are all about hair loss and should help you. Carrie is the medical director of The DUTCH test by Precision Analytical. That’s dried urine test for comprehensive hormones. There’s some more posts after this. She does talk about Alopecia Areata and her videos are well worth watching. According to the first post, Hashimoto’s can be a cause sadly.
Thank you very much. I am going to phone my doctors tomorrow to schedule a blood test, but I will talk to my doctor about the hair loss and ask of those things can be tested.
Hi Jennifer, how distressing! I’m sorry. I think I have Poliosis but have just realised as not been to the hairdresser for a hair colour for a year so dont know when that started. I seems its all connected with auto immune’s x
Ive lost all the hair colour in a large patch on one side at the back of my head. Thats Poliosis. I was diagnosed in 2019 with hashimotos after being fobbed off and not told my blood results for years and lots of poor health and since then being treated for auto immune Sjogrens and eosinophillic oesophagitis. I think I have other auto immunes too. If I’d have known years ago I would have been trying to adress all this auto immune back then. I’m gluten and dairy free and take LDN and a range of other supplements x
So is it safe for you to dye your hair with Poliosis? And can I ask do you take Levothyroxine for your Hashimoto's?
I was fobbed off a lot too. Was given Vitamin D supplements at the start, kept telling me my TSH wasn't low enough so I shouldn't be showing symptoms, and the last straw for me was when I was told to maybe go to the gym and build up muscle thats why my muscles were aching from doing everyday tasks. I eventually paid to see Dr Toft privately, he took one look at my blood test results and told me I had an underactive thyroid, that it was Hashimoto's due to an antibody test that was done.
I tried gluten free for about 10 days, but I found it really hard to stick to, I am quite a fussy eater and I ended up just really not enjoying my food.
I definitely feel like LDN helps! My throat swells without it like a golf ball is stuck in it and its absolutely miserable. It goes when I take LDN. My antibodies have come down a lot too to 147. I am looking into DNA viruses like EBV and HPV causing automimmune and have started taking AHCC supplement. There must be more going on as my thyroid levels are good but I dont feel as well as before I started taking Levo. So I keep looking into things and trying my best to keep well like excerise and cold water swimming. I take ThyroidS now x
I think I should maybe start requesting my blood test results so I can look at the numbers myself. Everytime I get a blood test, I phone for the result and the receptionist just tells me it came back fine, what is that supposed to mean??
I think it was easy to put my hair loss down to stress as my mum suddenly passed away and then 7 months later I had my first bald patch. But since then I've had 3 more patches on my head, I lost a good few eyelashes and some of my eyebrow too. Surely all that can't just be stress, when I don't even feel stressed!! X
I'm not sure if online access is possible at my doctors, I will look into that though. Thanks.
The site is great and I don't use it enough, I end up forgetting about it. But I am worried about the hair loss, I can't keep going through the cycle of losing some hair, starts to grow back, then another patch appears x
You are legally allowed to have copies of test results, my surgery will print them off for me, just have to ring up and can pick them up from reception shortly afterwards, they even once printed them off when I checked in for a appointment and came and handed them to me whilst I waited to see the doctor.
I used onion and ginger juice to help grow it and thicken the hair... I have experienced this since last year tried all sorts of solutions but the best is onion and ginger... mixed with black seed and tea tree oil and rosemary oil
