Functional Therapist required

My elderly friend, mentioned before, has had a private blood test done ( on my recommendation) and has folate deficiency anemia and her vitamin d is also very low. Please may I ask if anyone knows of a functional therapist, please pm me. We are in Gloucestershire, but as it would probably be a telephone consultation, from anywhere would help. Her daughter is here from Australia and pulling her hair out with local GPs

If she isn’t taking any supplements she needs to start with vitamin D

Government recommend EVERYONE supplements vitamin D at least October to April

But elderly recommended to supplement everyday

How low is her vitamin D ?

Vit D 34.2 (50-175)

B12 150 (37-187)

Folate 4.4 (3.89-19)

Transferrin saturation 10.8 (20-50)

Ferritin 103 (13-150)

Iron 6.9 (5.8-34.5)

The doctor has put her on iron supplements and her daughter is trying to sort the vitamins out. Perhaps you could recommend what she should take. Bit of a mine field out there trying to find the right ones. I suggested the one with K2 and to take a magnesium supplement.

Her GP should prescribe 1600iu vitamin D daily for 6 months

Alternatively she could buy Better You vitamin D mouth spray

The red one includes Vitamin K2

One spray = 1000iu

Once she Improves level, very likely to need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via vitamindtest.org.uk

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function.

This is the version that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7

She hasn’t been eating well at all until now as she’s had nausea with her vertigo and went to hospital after vomiting black blood and has erosion of her stomach mucosa .

Do her doctors know she is vomiting up black blood? Does it look like coffee grounds? This should be treated as an emergency because she could bleed to death via blood loss in the stomach. Her low iron and incredibly low transferrin saturation show that she is in serious trouble, and iron supplements aren't going to achieve much if she is continuing to bleed.

The reason that blood looks black when it comes from the digestive system is because it turns black as a result of being partly digested. People can see what looks like coffee grounds if they vomit up their stomach contents and coffee grounds can also be seen in faeces.

One thing that makes things difficult is that iron supplements make faeces almost black in everyone who takes them, so it can disguise the fact that bleeding is continuing.

she’s had nausea with her vertigo

If your friend has been losing blood via vomiting and/or through her poo then the vertigo she has could be dizziness as a result of severe blood loss causing hypovolemia. And again, a few iron supplements aren't going to fix that.

Your friend needs emergency help with blood transfusion and repair of whatever part of her gut is bleeding, in my opinion. (But I'm not a doctor.)
