Could someone point me to a guide for taking vitamins and supplements

Hi,

I'm trying to work out a plan for taking various vitamins and supplements. I've read alot of posts from knowledgeable members who have suggested best times to take certain supplements with also the best form of that supplement and which interactions may occur with others. I'm sure there must be a thread on this could someone please provide a link or point me in the right direction. The vitamins I'm looking to take are B complex magnesium, vit D and K.

I don't know of a thread where this has been summarised, but I can give you some general suggestions.

A recent post from SeasideSusie is very helpful :

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Quite a few years ago I got some advice that I have found helpful (although I've never understood why it works) :

a) Vitamins should generally be taken earlier in the day.

b) Minerals should generally be taken later in the day.

If I mess with those two rules it tends to make my chronic insomnia worse while also making me more dopey during the day.

One possible timetable :

1) Take thyroid hormones as early in the day as possible. If you regularly get up for a pee during the night you could take them then.

2) An hour or more after taking thyroid hormones you can eat breakfast.

3) Four hours after breakfast take all the vitamins.

4) Sometime during the evening take magnesium.

Isn't it because vitamins are supposed to give you energy and perk you up, whilst minerals make you sleepy? Can't say I've ever found that to be true personally. I'm quite happy to take vit C at midnight and sleep like a long! But, that's just me, I guess. :D

Yes, that was the reason I was given. But I still don't understand why vitamins are "energising" and minerals are "calming". I've come to the conclusion I don't need to know. It just works for me and apparently quite a few others. 😄

I would agree about vitamin C - I think it is the only exception though (for me at least). It can be taken anytime, and can help people to absorb iron, amongst other things.

There are also suggestions that it could be good for some people to take with Levo. I decided I wasn't that keen on the idea since it lowers TSH dramatically apparently.

SeasideSusie and I had a brief discussion about taking Vitamin C and Levo together just yesterday :

I didn't know that vit C lowered TSH! Wow! I wonder why. Thanks for the info!

Yes, I was shocked too. I only found out the effect on TSH from the link Susie gave in the conversation I referred to.

I personally would only take the vitamins I am actually lacking in.

Hi, that's my intention but want to make sure that I'm not taking one suplement in a manner that may have a detrimental effect on another.

Ok ... it is just some people take lots of vitamins that they actually do not need to take.

Vits D and K need to be taken with some form of fat. If yours are in an oil-filled capsule, that's fine, take them whenever - four hours away from thyroid hormone, though. But, if they are pills, they need to be taken with a piece of cheese, or something fatty, because they are fat soluble. :)
