Thankyou, do is it basically saying to take folic acid?? I was taking this before I knew I had a thyroid problem and did manage to get pregnant(which my doctor was shocked about as he said I had some of the highest levels of under active thyroid he’s seen) but sadly miscarried early on. But wasn’t sure if it would be okay to take alongside levothyroxibe.

I read it as being about B3 - Niacin

Please take folic acid. It’s extremely important that all pregnant women take it for the first trimester, and ideally before trying to conceive too. Just take it at the other end of the day to your thyroid meds. You should also look to get your TSH below 2 before TTC as this should reduce your risk of miscarriage. Once you are pregnant your doc should increase your dose. Good luck!!

Thank you so much I will defo take it! I take my levo at 7:30am so it will be okay to take folic acid about 3pm wouldnt it?.. I will see if my doctor will tell me my TSH levels.

A couple of links you might find interesting :

pharmacytimes.com/publicati...

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu......

What is useful - but time consuming - is to do a web search of each nutrient that humans take in and combine it with the word "pregnancy" i.e. do a search for :

"vitamin A deficiency pregnancy"

"vitamin B1 deficiency pregnancy" [Vitamin B1 is also known as thiamine or thiamin.]

Here is a list of all the vitamins that humans need :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin

Note that some supplements are better than others e.g.

Take vitamin D3, not vitamin D2.

Methylcobalamin is (usually) better absorbed than cyanocobalamin or hydroxocobalamin.

A list of minerals that are needed by humans :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miner...

Note that people with hypothyroidism often end up with many nutrient deficiencies. It's far too expensive to test all nutrients, but testing some of the basic ones that get mentioned on here all the time is well worth doing.

Thankyou! I just wasn’t sure if some vitamins interfered with levothyroxine? .. thought I read somewhere not to take vitamin D for some reason.. might be wrong!

You can take vitamin D, but it has to be taken fours hours before or after taking thyroid hormones.

Magnesium and iron also have to be taken separately by four hours. So does oestrogen.

Other vitamins and minerals have to be taken 2 hours away from thyroid hormones.

I'm afraid I can never remember the rules accurately or completely regarding these things.

SeasideSusie would know the rules properly.

Thankyou for your help! I’mSo new to this even though I got diagnosed in august I don’t fully know everything to do with it haha! They started me off on 50mg then as soon as I found out I was pregnant they upped my dose to 100mg but I had a miscarriage straight away anyway, but then it went slightly overactive about a month ago so they put me on 75mg but my recent blood test said everything is fine atm so hopefully I can conceive again soon🤞

Humanbean is correct.

Vit D - 4 hours away from thyroid meds.

Magnesium - 4 hours away from thyroid meds.

Iron - 4 hours away from thyroid meds, also iron should be taken 2 hours away from any other supplements or medication as it affects their absorption.

Calcium - 4 hours away from thyroid meds.

Oestrogen - 4 hours away from thyroid meds.

Any other supplements - 2 hours away from thyroid meds.

Take Levo on it's own, one hour before or 2 hours after food, with a glass of water only and water only for one hour either side.

Incredibly important to have thyroid levels steady and stable

All four vitamins need to be OPTIMAL....but not TOO high

Folate and B12 are Goldilocks vitamins......not too little or too much

TSH MUST BE UNDER 2

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

Ask GP to test vitamin levels

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

ALWAYS get the actual results and ranges

Frequently only TSH is tested and that’s completely inadequate

You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results and ranges.

The best way to get access to current and historic blood test results is to register for online access to your medical record and blood test results

UK GP practices are supposed to offer everyone online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need "enhanced access" to see blood results.

Link re access

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

In reality many GP surgeries do not have blood test results online yet

Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up.

Important to see exactly what has been tested and equally important what hasn’t been tested yet

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Come back with new post once you get results
