Are there different ingredients in Mercury Parma T3 and Tiromel

Yesterday I posted that I had run out of my prescription MP T3 but had some out of date Tiromel.

I took the Tiromel 12.5mcg about 11am

By dinner time my arms were itching and red

I took another 12.5 at 10pm

At 3am my skin was very prickly and my arms and face were itching

I’m wondering if there is something that may not agree with me 🤔

I haven’t taken any T3 today, hopefully my prescription will be ready to collect this afternoon.

The active ingredient (liothyronine) will be the same, the excipients may be different and it could be that is causing the problem.

Yes that’s what I was wondering, I was interested to know what the different ingredients were to try and identify, unfortunately I can’t read the Tiromel info sheet.

I’m not normally allergic to medicines, the only other time I had a reaction was to too much Vit C when I was very hypo.

I was tempted to take another to see if the itching starts again but worried incase I have a more severe reaction.

Thanks for your reply

According to the info on TUK website (somewhere on this page thyroiduk.org/medications-f... ), Tiromel ingredients are:

Liothyronine sodium, lactose, polyvinylpyrrolidone, starch, magnesium stearate

polyvinylpyrrolidone - when I googled said it’s very low toxicity when taken orally.

I’ve picked up my new prescription (which is Morningside not MP) will see how this goes, if we’ll I’ll try another Tiromel and see what happens

Thanks

Polyvinylpyrrolidone is often called povidone within ingredient lists. Widely used in medicines.

(Important not to confuse povidone with the very common antiseptic povidone-iodine. Povidone does not itself contain iodine.)

Well I took my prescription T3 at 4pm and my skin is feeling a lot better now 7pm, no itching - it’s still a little tingly but I wonder if that’s due to missing my morning dose...I wasn’t sure whether to just leave it now until my morning dose tomorrow and then give it a few days and then try the Tiromel again to see if I react again.. 🤔

Hope this soon resolves for you.I've taken out of date Tiromel but had no ill effects.

Had you previously taken any from this batch?

No I bought it just incase I got nowhere with my Dr/Endo, however I was lucky to get a trial on T3 via NHS, therefore have never needed to take the Tiromel.

I only took it because I accidentally ran out of my prescription, so I only took 1 tablet taken in 2 halves. It was just odd how itchy my arms became so I wondered if it was down to the Tiromel.

I’ve just picked up my new prescription (which is Morningside this time not MP) so we’ll see how I go with this. If ok I might try the Tiromel again and see if the itching happens again 🤷‍♀️ very odd.

I realize that this thread is a few months old now, and hopefully you're not feeling itchy any more. Just wanted to add my experience of Tiromel.

I took Tiromel several years ago and also had an allergic reaction to it. Mine didn't come on as suddenly as yours, after a couple of weeks (maybe a week) I came out in itchy hives. At first just on my hands, then feet, then spreading to other parts of my body. Once I realized what the culprit was I switched meds and the hives slowly went away. I've taken several different NDTs and T3s and not had the same reaction to them. I'm not sure which filler was causing it, I suspect the polyvinylpyrrolidone, but it is also in other meds which I'm fine with so maybe not.

Hi, it’s was a bit strange, I left it a while then tried again. Took 1/2 a tablet (12.5mcg) in the morning and took my prescription 10mcg in the afternoon- I’ve had no more reactions- so I’m now a bit baffled myself 🤷‍♀️

How strange! Good though that you're not reacting to it now though :)
