I couldn't find anywhere private for this in Glasgow area in 2018. I did eventually get it done on nhs but what a struggle. Good luck .

Hi, I know this is a bit off subject but I’m going for an iron infusion tomorrow on the NHS in London. Can you tell me from your experience did you feel ok when you had it done. I’m a little anxious that I’m going to feel ill. Thank you.

I paid for an iron infusion at the iron clinic in London. Was done and dusted in about twenty minutes and it was totally fine. Just felt coolness on insertion but was fine. I was scared and nervous but it was ok. Sadly it didn’t improve my symptoms but wanted to try anyway

Thank you. That has reassured me. I keep reading about all the side effects that can happen but haven’t found anyone that had any of them.

I think like anything people can always have a reaction but the guy told me it’s usually related to the canula rather than the actual treatment. I felt a bit flu-y a few days later and they said that was to be expected. My level went up to over 300 lol. Cost me just under a grand. I was desperate. Least I can rule out low iron now 😂 you’ll be fine and if any issues you’re already in hospital. My place was like a clinic on Harley street with women getting Botox and stuff.

For the NHS your ferritin needs to below 5 (from memory) and in addition I believe haemoglobin needs to below a certain level.

Any private hospital with a haematology dept should be able to offer you an infusion. They are expensive however.

Some larger pharmacies also offer this service.

Thanks for your reply. I’ts actually for my Granddaughter who has low ferritin and doesn’t obsorb iron, she’ here from OZ and has been since March due t the lock down she has fainted a couple of times over here. She would get the iron infusion in hospital when she’s over there just a bit concerned.

Then there’s grounds for her to get it even on the NHS if she’s fainting. Can she register as a temporary patient at a local NHS practice as she’s staying with you? They should be able to arrange the infusion and if necessary charge her as she’s foreign. Still likely to be cheaper than private.

Thanks, She is registered with a GP however he wants to go through all the normal procedures ie Iron pills they don’t work she’s now been prescribed syrup and then perhaps iron injections before she’s offered the iron infusion so hopefully she doesn’t have anymore episodes .......

Well if she can provide evidence/previous medical evidence that she can’t absorb via her stomach then that should fast forward it straight to infusion stage.

If not then you will have to go through the pointless steps if she genuinely can’t absorb via stomach.

Has she been tested for thallasemia? Worth looking that up as it’s often missed by doctors, including haematologists!
