Total thyroidectomy and the flu jab

Hi, I am 60 years old, I had a total thyroidectomy 2 years ago because of a substernal goitre and take Levothyroxine. When I contacted my GP practice to arrange my very first flu jab, the receptionist told me that my profile hadn’t flagged up on their system and therefore I wouldn’t be getting an invite for the vaccine. I was under the impression that hypothyroidism is classed as a chronic illness and therefore I should be getting a flu jab. In these worrying times I want to do everything I can to protect myself. Could I ask, is it safe for someone who has has TT to have the jab and should I be arranging to have one elsewhere ? Thanks

What, do they ration flu shots in the UK? I'm in the US and I would think right now they'd want everybody to get flu shots, particularly those with chronic illness and over 60.

It’s not listed as a qualifying criteria.

Vaccine is being extended this year so, “Healthy 50- to 64-year-olds will be contacted about a flu vaccine later”

Once the priority ones are vaccinated you may be offered it then.

There is the option to pay privately. My employer arranged for me to have it. NHS usually invite me, after the priority cases. I’m flagged as in the in the carer category.

The rules might well vary between Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England.

It is important to go to the right website for the bit of the UK being considered.

My husband who is fit and well at 65 has been offered the flu vaccine but he has refused it. I am a bit younger at 60 but I have no intention of having it because it doesn't protect against all the strains. I used to have it when I worked for the NHS years ago but I still got the flu. I actually feel safer from getting the flu this years because of all the hand washing and mask wearing.

I agree , i think the risk of flu ought to be much lower this year than usually ,if everyone (hopefully!) is washing hands and surfaces so much more frequently.

I thought everyone over 60 was supposed to be habing a flu jab this year. I don't think Hypothyroidism is classed as a chronic illness, I have one originally because of asthma and also had a thyroidectomy and cancer.
