Flu jab advisable or not?

NellieFlindt profile image
55 Replies

I would like advice on the wisdom of having the flu jab which my surgery is offering me. I have Hashimoto's and am 65 - diagnosed with an under active thyroid 25 years ago - I'm wondering whether, as Hashimoto's is an auto-immune disease, it would be wise not to have the flu jab in case my immune system reacts badly to it. Has anyone experienced a bad reaction after having the flu jab? Any cold or virus I catch tends to wipe me out for weeks so I'm nervous about introducing the flu virus to my system, albeit in a medically reduced form. Thank you in advance!

Thank you for this link, I'm new to the site so haven't seen them, really helpful.

I’ve had a good experience with the flu jab. Get no adverse effects and seem to get fewer colds as well as no flu if I have the jab. I also have Hashimotos. But we’re all different, I suppose you can only try it and see. Good luck

I’m very prone to getting flu if I don’t have the jab too. I suppose that’s also a factor for me.

in reply to Aurealis

How many times have you been diagnosed with the flu?

Aurealis profile image
Aurealis in reply to

I’ve had it most years I haven’t had the jab!

in reply to Aurealis

I have also taken them for years without any problems whatsoever. Diagnosed with Hashimoto's 17 years ago. I have not had the flu since I started getting shots. For whatever it's worth...

I haven't had one in decades and have never had the flu. I also had very low vitamin D levels which usually means you are prone to all sorts of infections so I don't understand why I wasn't always ill. There is definitely aluminum in flu shots said the doctors who have spoken against them. Aluminum is considered an adjutant which you need if your body is going to produce antibodies against the virus in the shot. They also have to be correct in choosing the virus for the particular year. We know aluminum is something that may accumulate in the body. Just be cautious.

I've never had one and never had flu. Rarely get colds either. There's no way you can tell why you don't get flu - interestingly, a study showed that the majority of people "diagnosed" with "swine flu" in a US hospital didn't have the flu virus at all, but just bad colds - it's rare these days to have a swab done when the GP says you have flu, so I suspect most people don't have it.

Interesting question. Ive been debating over the flue jab. Not sure Im keen on there being aluminium in it.....strong family history of altzeimers so frankly the thought of aluminium being present puts me off. I dont get flu regularly. Never have. However when my vit D levels were low I got really bad flu twice in three months.....correcting my vit D levels with D3 supplements resolved not only the aches & pains that come with very low vitamin D but banished the flu too. Not had it since..... 😊😊 so think I'll pass the jab by unless my health changes showing a real need.

VitD ? - do you know your level ? it needs to be around 100 if you are in the UK.

In the above link there are other articles about the lies told in order to market the multi-billion dollar flu vaccine. It is an American website.

I have Hashimotos and do NOT have the vaccine. The TB vaccine some 60 years ago gave me endless problems which I am still dealing with today :-( Yes I ended up with TB in the gut - the very illness the vaccine was meant to prevent !

First of all nobody can say to have a flu jab because what if you have an adverse reaction ??

Read the large patient information leaflet - it states clearly that you can get Guillain Barre - this is what I had from a tetanus booster - ironically at a well woman screening! I was paralysed and could have died!

Man people get out of shape when you slam vaccines and posts are even stopped on here and Facebook but the facts are all there to read in the PIL - not the little information sheet, the actual large paper that is with the vaccine that you are meant to read so that you are fully informed.

It lists the ingredients which are formaldehyde, traces of mercury (thimerosol) polysorbate 80, msg to name a few.

There are recent studies linking flu vaccines to Alzheimer’s, and miscarriages!

If you want to ask someone any questions about it then I would recommend that it is not someone who is financially incentivised or rewarded (doctors receive £9.80 per jab) and a Tesco pharmacist told me recently that it’s £19.80.

There is an excellent 7 part documentary series called the truth about vaccines - as it explains that the reason why so many people feel ill after the flu jab is because their bodies are being poisoned.

Don’t let fear tactics sway your decision! Why be afraid of the flu? Propaganda !!!

A 19 year old died after a flu jab a couple of weeks ago, shame it’s. It on the news!

Ask a credible expert who understands the immune system. Our amazing bodies have a great immune system.

How can any sane person contemplate putting formaldehyde into their body! Ugh! The very thought!

Chippysue profile image
Chippysue in reply to greygoose

they ban formaldehyde in furniture but not in vaccines! Not to mention the animal and human cells in other vaccines!

Some vaccines are very useful and life saving, but the flu jab isn't one of those.

This is not 'uninformed garbage', it is personal opinions - to which we are all entitled. You've just expressed yours.

This is not a flu vaccine forum, it is a thyroid forum, so if you want 'informed garbage' about flu vaccines, perhaps you're on the wrong page?

I too asked on here recently about having the flu jab and yes there was a very mixed response. The deciding factor for me was that if colds etc knock me for six, take ages to recover from etc then what would the actual flu do? So I decided to go for it.

I spoke to the nurse first explained my concern, she was great. No facts but she did admit that some people are very unwell after having it, but she feels some of that is timing ie you were about to go down with something anyway.

I had it done 2 weeks ago - I was, and still am, fine. Hope this helps

I don't understand why a vaccine would need nasty fillers. I think most of us on this site are susceptible to adverse reactions from fillers / pesticides and that why we have Hashimoto s in the first place.

Wishing you all health & happiness 😃

I’ve always declined the offer. Have to say I wash my hands a lot, drink lots of fluids and don’t touch banisters in public places.

Having read the comments above it makes me wonder about a friend who has every vaccination known to man and who suffers from absolutely masses of allergies and still gets colds etc.

I’ve never said I don’t have the vaccine and I suspect she wouldn’t come near me if she thought I didn’t have it.

Well, considering the one that has just been OKayed for next year (Fluad) caused 19 deaths in Italy, I won't be having it. The current ones are ineffective in the over 65s, apparently, and a recent study showed that, because the vaccines are incubated in eggs, the virus mutates so it doesn't actually protect you against the strains that were chosen, or possibly any human strains.

sciencedaily.com/releases/2...

I'd optimise vitamin D levels and get some sambucol just in case.

I also have Hashimoto’s and an autoimmune neurological disease for which I am immune suppressed ( medicated ). I have the flu vaccination every year advised by my neurologist and GP. I also have stage 3 CKD. The flu vaccine ( injectable) is NOT a live vaccine. It is a dead vaccine and should not cause any adverse effects. I have had flu twice many years ago and I would never want to get it now. My advice is to have it but it is ultimately a personal choice

I am really concerned about some of the comments on here regarding the flu vaccination. The Flu is a serous viral illness and can be very damaging to those who are susceptible to the virus. Some of the comments on this thread are ill informed and totally wrong.

Marz profile image
Marz in reply to

So are you saying that the Ileo-caecal TB that had me in hospital for six months with endless surgery at 27 is ill-informed. Please give me some information that says that ALL vaccines are safe. Surely if I had had the vaccine some 14 years earlier I should have been protected ....

Have you actually read the links that have been posted ?

in reply to Marz

I can't comment on your individual circumstances as I'm not your health care provider. What I have said earlier on in the thread is that it is a personal choice. The flu vaccine is a dead vaccine. The NHS choices website gives very good informative information regarding the flu vaccination and should help anyone who is not sure whether to have the vaccine or not

This thread is about the flu vaccination

Hillwoman profile image
Hillwoman in reply to

Thank you, I'm well aware of that. This is the third or fourth discussion of the flu vaccine in the past fortnight. There has been a continuing discussion on this forum for several years about abnormal immune response to vaccination, leading to autoimmune disease, including Hashimoto's. Unfortunately, the same issues of response, toxic adjuvants, production methods and questionable public heath policy keep coming up and apply to this disussion as well as others.

I would also like to point out that usually on this forum we can agree politely to disagree about serious issues. Sadly, under this particular post some people with pro-vaccination views have chosen to be offensive (now edited by administrators), or just rude in the assumptions they make, e.g. your own assumption that experienced and well-read members of this forum are "ill-informed and totally wrong".

in reply to Hillwoman

I said I’ll informed that’s not rude but an observation of comments already made. The link between vaccinations and autoimmune diseases is ongoing but not yet proven beyond reasonable doubt. I provided an opinion like others on here and advice. I will always say ultimately it is individual choice and each individual should discuss with their healthcare provider and make a decision. I have also provided the link to the nhs choices information on vaccines which covers all the concerns raised. I am pro flu vaccine yes but that is my choice and I can only give advice to people. I have 27 years NHS experience, I have two autoimmune conditions one of which is relapsing and remitting and for which I am immune suppressed. I also have stage 3 CKD and chronic migraine. I have experience of having full blown flu which left me bed bound for two weeks and took months to fully recover from I have the flu vaccination every year, the only effect being a slightly sore arm and increased fatigue for a day. I fully respect others concerns and always refer them back to their health care provider where having read others experiences and information from trusted websites they can have an informed discussion taking into account all of their core morbidities and make the best decision for them

Hillwoman in reply to

People here have suffered similar ill-health to your own - myself included. We have also become very sceptical about 'official' sources of information, which frequently disregard the medical literature. Many forum members are well-qualified and/or well-read, so I'm afraid I do think you are being rude.

in reply to Hillwoman

Well all I’m doing is giving my opinion and advice. If you want to call that ‘rude’ then you must think that all the other opinions and advice given here is also ‘rude’ Personally I don’t think anything on this thread is rude.

Very wise not to. Take Vitamin C this has really helped my with colds and sinus.

I used to get terrible bouts of flu bronchitis and endless colds but once I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and properly medicated I rarely get ill probably one cold a year so I decided to let my own immune do the flu fighting I did read you don’t learn to fight the latest strains which might not be so good. If I was ill with them all the time i’d question if my medication/vits/minerals were correct and as good as they should be, as something is compromising the immune system. If those werein order I’d give in and have the jab. Not sure if in itself it could be bad for you.

Erika1239,

Well that's how polio, diptheria, and other previously fatal illnesses have been eradicated.

Marz profile image
Marz in reply to Clutter

Also improved hygiene contributed to the eradication of fatal illnesses and in my area of Somerset - with higher levels of Polio in the 50's - it was decided to clean up the sewage disposal into the sea.

I did have my children vaccinated so am not anti-vaccine - I just feel we should be well/better informed. I am now more so than I was back in the 60's when my girls were small. Thankfully there were not so many vaccines back then - but at the end of the day it is another money spinning operation for Big Pharma. I also think people should have choices and not be brow beaten into having vaccines - as they are doing in some countries.

Clutter profile image
Clutter in reply to Marz

Marz,

I'm a little concerned at the amount of vaccines issued in a short space of time to infants but on the whole I am pro-vaccine. Yes, there are sad vaccine injuries and deaths but illnesses such as measles, whooping cough and flu can also kill or cause lifechanging injury.

Angel_of_the_North profile image
Angel_of_the_North in reply to Clutter

As I said, many vaccines are a great idea and life saving, but the flu vaccine is not one of them, and it's ineffective as recent studies show - perhaps because of the egg incubation period. It also worries me that way back, we used to be tested for flu vaccine allergy if we had asthma, or hay fever or were allergic to eggs or feathers - doesn't happen now, but the patient information leaflet suggests that it can cause problem is people with egg allergies - so why no allergy tests any more? It's usually not the virus in the vaccine that people react to but the medium and adjuvants.

I do think there is a place for the flu jab but its a question of weighing up the advantages to the potential disadvantages. When I was about to go through chemo during the winter months I had a flu jab before I started the treatment. In that situation I think that was a wise move given that my immune system was going to be disabled by the chemo & to catch something like flu could have killed me. So the risk was less if I had the flu jab to not having it. I was grateful for the flu jab and luckily suffered no side effects what so ever.

So much of medicine is like that sadly.....

Having said that too often the basic natural ways are missed for pharmaceutical synthetic concoctions. The miracle of having a good level of vitamin D and taking supplementation to ensure this is optimised is an absolute prime example of this.....boosting the immune system as nature would have it and in that enabling our bodies to fend off far more nasty viruses. Brilliant!

So all we can do is ensure we are well informed so we can discuss with our docs to weigh up the advantages to disadvantages for us personally to decide whether a flu jab is necessary and worth the risk/s it brings with it.
