Chances of that

Hi everyone, this is the first time I've posted on thyroid uk. I have had a diagnosis of Hashimoto's since January 2011, but still have had no treatment for this condition. My gp is in the wait and see ball park.

I know that I have had a problem with my thyroid since after my son was born in 1989 but didn't get any sign of diagnosis until 2011. Now what are the chances of someone developing other autoimmune conditions because a single one, was left untreated?

I can tell you that as I was diagnosed with hashimoto's in the January, the months later in April 2011, I was rushed into the hospital with jaundice and a diagnosis of 2 Autoimmune liver conditions were also added to the list, then a week ago, another was added of celiac disease, but I have asked my consultant to have another look at that one because, I have never in my life had any trouble with gluten.

I need to ask anyone with hashimoto's especially, what ranges on any thyroid blood tests do we have to have before we are offered any treatment. I ask because the nodules on my thyroid are a bit inflamed, I know because I feel like I have a lump stuck in my throat. Sometimes it's more noticeable than others. I also suffer headaches, nausea, aches and pains and of course, these are related to my liver except that I have developed, especially this last 12 months or so, an intolerance to the heat, and I sweat quite a lot more than I ever did, and I mean at the slightest exertion.

I have no idea what a thyroid storm is but on several occasions now, I have been quite unwell with nausea and vomiting, weakness, I couldn't stand up, dizziness, all my joints hurt, a fever to the point of delirium, abdominal pain that is not the usual for me...and confusion as to why this happens. I have also noticed palpitations and twitching in my arms.

I am at my wits end with this and the only possible explanation for this is either thyroid storm or, addison's crisis there is no ther possible cause. My AIH and PBC overlap (liver), has never caused me the nausea and vomiting .

Any suggestions please, on how I can get my thyroid phobe of a doctor listen to me and notice the signs that it's time to treat my hashimoto's because, I believe that if this was actually treated, everything else would balance out and I would have a much better quality of life.

Any suggestions will be read and taken on board thank you. I am getting my bloods done today and my hepatolagist has asked for my TSH to be done along with the usual liver etc. This is unusual because it's not by my asking so hopefully he suspects something. I really do wish this is the case. My only other option is to play the medical neglect card. I have a diagnosed illness and the gp or other medical personnel are not following their code of ethics by not giving treatment for a diagnosed condition...

I have to look after me and I want to feel well and have a much better quality of life.

Thank you x Alley

Welcome to our forum Alley

From reading the first part of your post you state that you were diagnosed as having hashimoto's but received no treatment!

You should have had treatment as hashimoto's is the commonest form of a thyroid gland dysfunction and it is due to having thyroid antibodies attacking your thyroid gland - they wax and wane until you're hypothyroid. Many doctors don't seem to have a clue about hypothyroidism and treatment for it.

Getting a TSH blood test can vary throughout the day, so we recommend the very earliest blood draw, fasting (you can drink water) and allow a gap of 24 hours between last dose of levothyroxine (when prescribed) and take it afterwards.

Also request B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate when next blood draw is due.

Labs differ in their machines for testing, so we always ask for the ranges to be shown and members are then able to respond to the result.

I'm sorry you are feeling very unwell. We all understand as we've all gone through similar experiences.

If by 'diagnosed with Hashimoto's' , you mean you had raised TPOab , (antibodies) ?

Then (as far as NHS are concerned) there is no actual treatment for that, however ,raised TPOab shows an higher probability of eventually becoming actually Hypothyroid ie raised TSH , Low FT4. So they should have continued to monitor your TSH at intervals to keep an eye on it.

They also have treatment guidelines for what they class as 'sub-clinical Hypothyroidism' (over-range TSH ,and in-range FT4) which state that if you have two raised TSH results (over ref range , but under 10) 3 months apart, and symptoms of hypothyroidism, they could offer you a trial of Levothyroxine.

i'll find a link to them for you .....

nice.org.uk/guidance/ng145/...

fo eg.

PAGE 13.

TREATING SUBCLINICAL HYPOTHYROIDISM

1.5.4 Consider a 6-month trial of levothyroxine for adults under 65 with subclinical

hypothyroidism who have:

• a TSH above the reference range but lower than 10 mlU/litre on 2 separate occasions

3 months apart, and

• symptoms of hypothyroidism.

If symptoms do not improve after starting levothyroxine, re-measure TSH and if the

level remains raised, adjust the dose. If symptoms persist when serum TSH is within

the reference range, consider stopping levothyroxine and follow the recommendations

on monitoring untreated subclinical hypothyroidism and monitoring after stopping

treatment.

Good morning and thank you to both of you for responding and for all the information. Just to address the b12 and vitamin d info...I have had vitamin d deficiency three times in the past 18 months...it has been addressed on each occasion by supplements from my gp. I now take a high dose daily because mine was very low. This said, I do have autoimmune liver disease which was diagnosed a couple months after the hashimoto's result. My B12 is very high and I am not supplementing it in any way it was above 1500. The thyroid antibodies....I have nodules on the thyroid and had several fine needle aspirations. Not only did I have the antibodies but the stuff they took from my nodu6was full of antibodies too.

I just want to be well and I think I'm going to get some private tests done because unfortunately as you all know, gps only go on numbers, not symptoms or life quality.

Take care.
