Hi there Elly
How do you feel? Are you on any medication?
Your TSH is ok but your free T4 is very low - almost at the bottom of the range. Ideally you would alos have other blood tests done. Free T3 (which tells you how well your free T4 converts into the active hormone needed in every cell of your body) and also key nutrients - ferritin, folate, vit D and B12, as you will feel best when these are good.
I need my free T4 MUCH higher than this - so if you are on medication, I'd up the dose 25 mcg; if you are not on levo, and not feeling good, it's worth having the other testing done.
Good luck x
Hi I’m not on any medication. I was getting tested for loads of things because I have the following symptoms - fatigue, dry skin, brittle nails with vertical ridges, missing eyebrows, can’t lose weight etc. I have very low folate levels and have been given folic acid tablets to take. Everything else was normal apparently
Your FT4 is very low, but your TSH doesn't reflect that. So, what you need now is your FT3 tested. If that is also low, it could be that you have Central Hypo.
Central Hypo is when the problem lies with the pituitary (Secondary Hypo) or the hypothalamus (Tertiary Hypo) rather than the thyroid itself (Primary Hypo).
Central Hypo is considered very rare, so doctors rarely test for it, or understand the results when they do. It's doubtful your GP will ever have heard of it. So, I would suggest you research it a little before broaching the subject with him.
What needs to happen is that your doctor refers you to an endo, so that the endo can order a brain scan, and test the other pituitary hormones - of which their are many, and they could all be low.
What time of day did you have the blood draw?
Thank you. Had the bloods drawn 10:30am
Well, TSH would have been higher before 9 am, but not by much. It would still look like Central Hypo.
Just testing TSH and FT4 is completely inadequate
ALWAYS get actual results and ranges..
.ring reception and request printed copies of results
Come back with new post once you get results
You need vitamin D folate ferritin and B12 tested
TSH Ft3 and FT4 plus BOTH TPO and TG thyroid antibodies
Hi that was the actual results and ranges as shown in the photograph. Vit b12 is 368 pg/ ml with ranges shown as 197-771Folate 3 ng/ml with ranges shown as 3.90-26.89 ( I have been given a four month course of folic acid)
I had anti nuclear anti body test done which just states positive.
I can’t see on any of the reports TPO or TH.
Thank you for replying
Do you are likely to need to test TPO and TG antibodies privately via medichecks or Blue Horizon
Also include testing of TSH Ft3 and FT4....and make sure to do test as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking any thing apart from water
B12 and folate both likely too low
See my second reply to this post a few days ago re B vitamins

Have you had vitamin D and ferritin tested?
Add results and ranges if you have them
I’ll get the private tests done. Don’t see VIT d on the report but ferritin serum is 157 ng/ml with normal ranges 14 - 186 so guess that’s ok
Yes ferritin is fine
With your low B12 and deficient folate did GP test for pernicious anemia?
Any family members have autoimmune diseases?
You could order just full thyroid testing and get vitamin D test separate
NHS postal kit vitamin D kit ,£29
No to pernicious anaemia. I have coeliac disease - I don’t cheat so on a complete no gluten diet.
Then autoimmune thyroid disease (hashimoto's) is far more likely than in average population
Should be tested for hashimoto's when coeliac was diagnosed
As coeliac you should have vitamin D test annually via GP
Low magnesium very common when on strictly gluten free diet
Do you supplement vitamin D or magnesium?
