He died of a stroke. I think he might have been about 72.

I only saw him once and he helped me, he was a wonderful doctor and is sadly missed by all his patients.

Here is a link to the thread about it.

He died of a stroke, I also feel as with others it was brought on by the stress of him having been accused of wrong doing by the BMA. I dont think he was that old.

holyshedballs profile image
holyshedballs in reply tostockman27

It wasn't the BMA who complained about Dr Skinner it was some doctors reporting him the GMC (as it was then, now the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service) AGAIN for the same things the GMC had praised him for in his previous hearing.

what di the GMC praise him for? WHy would they praise him when they were reprimanding him for prescribing biochemically Euthyroid patients with thyroxine? It is a bit of an oxymoron. lol

They praised him for his good work and care for his patients at the end his hearing.

The GMC found that he didn't put his patients at risk.

You can search for his hearings on either the GMC or the MPTS websites and download the transcripts of the hearings. I have them all only home computer. I'm at work now and don't have access to the folder I keep them in.

He was never fully reprimanded for his prescribing or practice. At one of his earlier hearings he had conditions placed on his license to practice to keep better records. At the second to last hearing (I think) he was told he had to have his work supervised by an Endocrinologist. I cant remember what the outcomes of that was because it was difficult to find an Endo that either could or would supervise him.

He was preparing a defence that he had been investigated sufficient times for the same things that it amounted to abuse of process or harassment or something on those lines and intended to use the GMC praise as part of his evidence.

I really do need my home computer for this one. I like to be accurate!! But not so accurate on this reply. The basics are here though.

Apologies for the incorrect information but I knew that somebody in the medical field was after him. I was informed later that he was prescribing T3 to patients I was one of those he treated.

holyshedballs profile image
holyshedballs in reply tostockman27

That is true. It was always other doctors who reported him.

Never a patient.

The doctors never supplied evidence of harm to patients, just that he wasn't following BTA guidance - usually.

At one point it was suspected that the BTA were orchestrating a campaign against him but there was no proof of that.

I met him several times. A very nice nice man who had a clear idea of what he was talking about. Humourous but with a strong intellect.

Apparently nowadays GPs go into the profession for the m oney rather than like what it used to be, caring for people. I saw one ad for a psychiatrist at bristol uni where they treat kids with ME/CFS with the Lightning Process mumbo jumbo stuff,

The top of the range for this salary was £107k a year. 107k for a job where mostly you push antidepressant pills to make the big pharma BILLIONs. The whole profession stinks.

Esther Ranzten claimed her daughter was cured of ME/CFS by the Lightning Process. DOn't know how true this is though.

I couldn't agree more. An ex-GF was a Nurse Practitioner and left because of the flagrant money grabbing by the GPs.

E.G. - they told her she couldn't sign death certificates (she was qualified to do so) because they wanted the fee for signing them.

Dr Skinner prescribed what he believed would help his patients and because those who consulted him were not improving on levothyroxine, he provided options such as NDT or T3.

He appeared before the GMC several times and it certainly wasn't his patients who complained. It must have caused immense stress to Dr Skinner and his staff. I assume it must have been 'others' who didn't like their patients requesting options to levothyroxine as they were not improving upon it.

shaws profile image
shawsAdministrator in reply tostockman27

Dr Skinner prescribed what he thought was most suitable for his patients. If we weren't improving on levo, he would prescribe alternatives, i.e. NDT, or T3/T4 or T3 alone. I believe he also took note of the clinical symptoms the patient had.

I remember before his last appearance that one of his Admirers did a computation about his appearances before the GMC and the odds were ridiculous.

He was up against those who have now removed NDT and T3 from being prescribed - even to those who cannot improve on levothyroxine at all (I am one).

shaws profile image
shawsAdministrator in reply tostockman27

He prescribed what his patients needed and I would assume that those who remained undiagnosed would consult with him and also those who didn't improve on levothyroxine.

His staff have been collating all of the scientific evidence since his untimely death and they were so upset about it.

As far as I understand they were hoping to publish all of the evidence when they had sufficient funds to do so.

He took more notice of the patients' clinical symptoms as he was taught as a student.

I consulted with him twice, once in his lovely home in lovely Lapworth and once in Bermingum. I was lucky as I lived only a few miles away. I reckon he was in his late 50s or early 60s at the most. Such a shame. And I am shocked there is no one around to take over his work. Everyone has to conform to the medical council wants. He did not actually cure me though but I got much better a few years later without any medication. There seems to be a percentage of people who don't improve and can't get rid of the ME/CFS/FM diagnosis.

I saw him many years back. I had been very poorly since a hysterectomy for quite a while. Gain f weight, utterly exhausted, aches and pains. My GP insisting that my blood results were in range.

As soon as Dr Skinner saw me at consultation he immediately informed me I was hypothyroid. He was angry with the lack of treatment I'd been given but not surprised. He set me and my GP on the course of giving treatment.

First Doctor to listen to me and believe what I was telling him. One of only a handful (if that) of doctors that did.

I always felt badly for him about how he had been treated by his profession. But he helped a great many people.

Dr Skinner was (I think) 71 or 72. He was hounded by some members of the BTA who incited GPs to submit complaints. This caused enormous stress as he also ran a vaccine charity Vaccine Research Trust. They were developing a vaccine for MRSA but funding dried up. Of course, charitable bodies will not give money if there is any controversy.

The GMC had introduced 'interim orders panel' (IOP) after the Shipman case. This allowed them to put restrictions on doctors under investigation until they could proceed with a Fitness to Practice (FTP) hearing. They abused multiple IOP hearings to avoid bringing Dr Skinner to an FTP where he could defend himself. Twice the GMC soliticor promised at an IOP that they would either drop the charges or go to an FTP hearing within months. Doctor Skinner died on the day it was announced for the second time that the FTP was being postponed and Dr Skinner suffered a fatal stroke.

The main allegation came from a GP, Dr Sally Hope who accused Dr Skinner of inappropriately prescribing thyroid hormone to her patient. Dr Skinner asked Dr Hope to prescribe (to save the patient money). Dr Skinner never prescribed for this patient.

The GMC hired an expert witness Dr Bouloux who is required to give impartial advice. Dr Boloux told a patient the GMC is investigating Dr Skinner, that 'we have been after him for years' and 'we've got him'. Dr Bouloux did not know that this patient was also a patient of Dr Skinner. See page D2/1 tpauk.com/images/docs/skinn... . Bouloux was dismissed but then the GMC said they wanted two expert witnesses but never got as far as appointing the second one.

Dr Skinner was killed by the stress caused by the then BTA and GMC. The GMC abused their powers to avoid the case going to a hearing, abusing IOP procedures to harass Dr Skinner.

It is well worth reading the full trancsripts of the GMC hearing(s),including the many patient testimonies.

I learned a great deal about Hypothyroidism from them. A lot of the evidence to support him is quite detailed biochemically.

I was very cross about the apparent persecution of Dr Skinner, which clearly came from inside the medical profession and not from Patients (although it does seem that one patient was 'encouraged ' to sign a complaint without realising the implications of it )

I think it's all on TPAUK's website here;

I just sent Nuffield Oxf a message LOL. that;s where Dr Sally works apparently.

I said when God made ME/CFS he said "I am going to make a new disease and its symptoms are going to be the same as hypo. LOL

Great. Let's all rob the chemist and take 50mcg T3 and get OSTEOPOROSIS and HEART ATTACK.

LOL If someone else does the same with a different joke, it would make my day as Dr Skinner was great.

could somebody send me the transcript later please with the medical biochemical stuff in it about hypo?

I spoke to him a couple of months before he died. I thought then something was wrong with him as he was not acting his usual self. He seemed very fragile. He is missed by many including me.

selftreatendo profile image

I am just reading the transcript and it says he took a test for thyroid chemistry and at the end she says Dr Skinner suspected a B12 deficiency. WHy would Dr Skinner suspect a B12 deficiency if he took a thyroid chemistry?

selftreatendo, Why are you so determined to pursue your own personal issues with this doctor? You have already been restricted once (under a different member account), for 'speaking ill of the dead' on this forum.

This forum is here to help and support people with thyroid problems. It is not the place for you to keep harping on about your mis/diagnosis of ME. Or about the whys and wherefores of what Dr Skinner did or did not say.

I am closing this post to further comments.
