Hi, would really like some advice please. Was diagnosed with Graves 3 months ago, after having a routine blood test. GP ended up sending me straight up hospital as TSH was suppressed and bpm was 140. Endo put me on 60mg Carbimazole and month later reduced to 40mg. Month later 10mg and now up to 20mg. In that period I went to under active to over active again, but now bloods are at 32 and are getting more stable. I think I’ve probably had this for 2 to 3 years. My hair has been thin on the top of my scalp for years, but over the last 3 weeks has been falling out at a rapid rate. I’m talking about 300 hairs a day., if not more. It is completely different to before. (I always felt I never had a lot of hair loss, but what I did just didn’t grow back) Generally, other than my hair, I’ve feel amazingly better than I did 3 months ago. Is this normal with my levels fluctuating so much or the carbimazole? My endo says he believes it was my levels over May. Will I lose the lot or will it calm down before I’ve lost everything. I am now getting ferritin, iron, zinc and vit d checked.

Everybody is different so we can't predict how it will be for you.
Hello Mauve .. I also have Graves .. I'm in remission now though .
I was diagnosed 2014 but I'm positive it was there for years with many unsuccessful attempts at diagnosis .
Like you my hair was coming out fast , ALL body hair too .
Carbimazole got me sorted and a healthy regime of good eating, lots of supplements etc .. has kept me Euthyroid. 🙏
The hair problem was sorted out too thank God by all of the above .
But unknown to me before ......my Endocrinologist explained to me in March ,this year , that the condition that your hair is in .. TODAY .. is a result of what was going on within your body 3 to 6 months AGO !
If you take time to think that out ...I'm sure you'll see the significance
.. and so, what you do today , to your body, likewise will affect you positively , hopefully and that would include your hair , and everything else, within that time frame too .
So get all those Vitamins , Minerals and Nutrients into your body now so that you will repair all the damage that has been done to your poor body , and to your Poor Thyroid 🦋 having had Graves Disease.
Be positive and learn all you can about Vitamins and Minerals that renew your Immune System and strengthen your Precious Thyroid Gland 🦋
Every cell in our body needs Thyroid Hormone .. and when the production is erratic ... then so are we !
Take Care ... Luv Mx🌹
Thank you for you reply. I’m now starting to look at supplements and find out everything I can. Would you mind if I ask you how long you were losing hair for? and can you go completely bald whilst your body settles at the right level. I can’t believed the amount I’ve lost in three weeks and my scalp feels sore and has a burning sensation. I really think at this rate I could of possibly lost everything in the next month. Sorry to go on and thank you for your help.
Hello Mauve
Welcome to the forum :
Can you please confirm what have you been diagnosed with and where is the medical proof.
There are two main reasons why your thyroid produces excess hormones and you feel hyperactive with an increased metabolism: Graves and Hashimoto's Disease.
These are both auto immune diseases and both start off with a " hyper " phase :
Graves is treated with anti thyroid drugs which block your own thyroid production.
Hashimoto's swings between hyper and hypo symptoms, but starts off with a hyper phase and is not treated with anti thyroid medication.
To confirm that you have Graves and the need for AT drugs you need an antibody test and you should have been proved positive for a TSI - stimulating or a TR ab - blocking antibody .
Do you have any blood test results confirming which antibodies you carry, and do you have copies of your initially blood test before you were medicated with Carbimazole ?
