Pins and needles

I’ve recently started feeling tingling, pins, needles and burning sensations through out my body. It’s sporadic and comes and goes all over and lasts a few minutes to hours. My vitamin d is 29 (Jan 2020) ferritin was at 10 (October 2019) now up to 40 (Feb 2020), b12 568 (october 2019). Folate hasn’t been checked. Thyroid labs from February 2020 : tsh .901, free t4 1.0, t4 6.0 ig/dL, t3 167 ng/dL, free t3 4.4 pg/4.4 pg/ml. I don’t have diabetes. Has anyone encountered these symptoms? Is it paresthesia or neuropathy Or something else? Thanks so much

We always need the reference ranges that come with results to be able to interpret them. Ranges vary from lab to lab.

Are you diagnosed hypothyroid and on Levothyroxine?

Pins and needles can be due to low B12. Your Total B12 at 568 is just about acceptable, would be better nearer 1000pg/ml (or ng/L), but you can have a good Total B12 level but still have a poor Active B12 level, and it's Active B12 that is available for the cells to use so it's a better test.

I am not an expert and don't have any knowledge like some others do.but I had these symptomes straight after I stopped my thyroxine medication. I was on 25units only so I was surprised. I also had some head faugines..I have hashimoto's. It lasted for a week and I felt fine after that.i hope you find what is causing it.

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

Is vitamin D nmol or ng/ml

Im reviewing my thyroid labs and ranges are not listed. I received these results from the hospital as I took myself to emergency after feeling these symptoms. The vitamin d is ng/ml. I’m on 90 mg of Armour that I started in November 2019. Prior to that I was on levo. Thank you all again!

Also I’d like to mention that my vitamin d has ranged between 27-32 ng/ml over the last year. Haven’t taken a supplement up until 1 month ago.

The Vit D Council recommends a level of 50ng/ml and the Vit D Society recommends between 40 and 60ng/ml. Your current level of 29 is too low. How much D3 do you supplement?

Are you also taking D3's important cofactors - magnesium and Vit K2-MK7?

D3 aids absorption of calcium from food and Vit K2-MK7 directs the calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissues where it can be deposited and cause problems such as hardening of the arteries, kidney stones, etc.

D3 and K2 are fat soluble so should be taken with the fattiest meal of the day, D3 four hours away from thyroid meds if taking D3 as tablets/capsules/softgels, no necessity if using an oral spray.

Magnesium helps D3 to work. We need Magnesium so that the body utilises D3, it's required to convert Vit D into it's active form. So it's important we ensure we take magnesium when supplementing with D3.

Magnesium comes in different forms, check to see which would suit you best and as it's calming it's best taken in the evening, four hours away from thyroid meds if taking magnesium as tablets/capsules, no necessity if using topical forms of magnesium.

tsh .901, free t4 1.0, t4 6.0 ig/dL, t3 167 ng/dL, free t3 4.4 pg/4.4 pg/ml.

It's impossible to interpret these results without ranges. All we can tell you that when on any NDT (or T3) then TSH tends to be low in range (possibly suppressed), with FT4 often lowish in range and FT3 is usually best in the upper part of it's range.

To get an accurate measure of the normal amount of circulating hormone then the test should be done as we always advise here:

* Book the first appointment of the morning, or with private tests at home no later than 9am. This is because TSH is highest early morning and lowers throughout the day. If we are looking for a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, or looking for an increase in dose or to avoid a reduction then we need TSH to be as high as possible.

* Fast overnight - have your evening meal/supper as normal the night before but delay breakfast on the day of the test and drink water only until after the blood draw. Eating may lower TSH, caffeine containing drinks affect TSH.

* If taking thyroid hormone replacement, last dose of Levo should be 24 hours before blood draw, if taking NDT or T3 then last dose should be 8-12 hours before blood draw. Adjust timing the day before if necessary and split dose into 2 or 3 if necessary. This avoids measuring hormone levels at their peak after ingestion of hormone replacement. Take your thyroid meds after the blood draw. Taking your dose too close to the blood draw will give false high results, leaving any longer gap will give false low results.

* If you take Biotin or a B Complex containing Biotin (B7), leave this off for 7 days before any blood test. This is because if Biotin is used in the testing procedure it can give false results (most labs use biotin).

These are patient to patient tips which we don't discuss with doctors or phlebotomists.

If at all possible I would try and get the reference ranges for those tests.

Thank you so much for all of the information! I am taking vitamin d3/k2 drops from Thorne. I am taking 10,000 iu (20 drops), just started this about 2-3 weeks ago. Do the drops interfere with the Armour? I am also taking Magnesium glycinate from Pure Encapsulations, which I started 2-3 weeks ago.

I did find the ranges :

Tsh .901 (.27-4.2)

Free t4 1.0 (.9-1.7)

T4 6 (4.5-11.7)

T3 167 (80-200)

Free t3 4.4 (2.4-4.2)

I definitely had these symptoms when low in B12, so much so that I was offered carpal tunnel surgery- this was luckily not the route I took. Instead I followed advice from Seaside Susie & others as this has helped me enormously. As soon as my B vitamins were in range the pins & needles & hand weakness faded.

Thank you for replying! How long did it take for your levels to normalize?

I felt much better after 3 months of being higher in the range of B vitamins. I took Thorne Basic B.

Hi Jaloz, Yes I had this very thing after my thyroidectomy in 2016 and it was and off and on type of event.

No doctor I saw could come up with any reason for my burning skin, pins and needles and I’m not diabetic either (although I sometimes wonder) now I have this weird internal tremor.

Thank you for replying! So do you still get the sensations or is your only symptom the internal tremor now? Weird that you mention that bc over the last couple of days I feel like I’m shaking in the inside too.

Hi Jaloz, So far Ive been good “tremor” wise. I’m not sure what that was all about.

A few days ago I woke up to the tips of my fingers (both hands) being purple as if I dipped my fingers tips in purple dye, it last a couple of hours and disappeared and hasn’t returned and the only other time this happened was 15yr ago when I went to visit my in laws on 1 hour and 45min flight and my legs were purple looked like I had Purple stockings on this lasted for several days and emergency room had no idea and neither did my GP.

It’s a mystery!
