Can anybody pm a name of the pharmacy where you get your Liothyronine T3 medication as I have a private prescription. Does anyone get it for less than £1 a tablet?

If it’s for 20mcg in multiples of 50 or 100 you can send to Germany for £39 for 100 on private script.

Have a look at thyroid uk, they have a list of pharmacies. I used bennewitz.

Are the 20’s you get big enough to cut into 4 pieces?

Yes, they're quite big- a bit smaller than an aspirin . I cut mine in half and take 10mcg twice daily. I use a tablet cutter I bought from the vet (!)

Do you pay them and then just send the prescription by post?

Hi yes they are thybonn henning so easily split in 4. Yes I place order and pay, post script same day and usually get delivery in 5-7 days.

Does your doctor put the quantity on the prescription? Or do they just put the strength & then you chose how many you want to order?

Dr has to put amount. They usually have 1-2yr expiry. I ask for 100 but only take 10 so lasts 9mnths

Details of where to send your prescription can be found on ThyroidUK's main website on this page:

thyroiduk.org/tuk/treatment...

If you wish to send it to Germany it must read

Liothyronine 20mcg

and then multiples of 50 or 100 tablets.

It cannot be dispensed if it says Liothyronine Sodium or any other dose than 20mcg.

How easy are the tablets to break up? I would be starting on 5mcg twice a day.

I don't know with that brand. I cut Unipharma 25mcg tablets easily with my pill cutter (they are quite "soft"), or you could use a craft knife/scalpel.

Do any of the German sites do either 5 or 10mcg of Liothyronine?

I suggest you visit their websites and check.

To the best of my limited knowledge, the only near-10 microgram dosage is from Ace in the Netherlands. But theirs is actually 12.5 micrograms. Not a pharmacy, a pharmaceutical company. They will supply to UK pharmacies but not individuals. Have a search on this forum as a handful of people get that.

5 microgram tablets tend to be available from companies that follow Pfizer and their Cytomel product - that is, USA "generic" suppliers like Mayne Pharma - but few others. (Though Ace also do them.)

Other than that, I think you are stuck with companies that manufacture specials.

If the 20’s are big enough to cut into 4 that would be ok.

I don't take them or handle them in any way so I hope someone else responds. :-)

No idea what a private prescription costs, but for £1 a tablet you could head to Greece. ✈️🌞💊

I get my Liothyronine from Bennewitz based in Germany. I get 200 tablets each time of 20mcg ThyBon Henning. I cut into quarters easily as I take 5mcg doses throughout the day. I use a scalpel to cut that I ordered off eBay. I find a scalpel easier than a pill cutter.

I’ve tried a few brands and for myself ThyBon Henning is by far a better tablet.

I send my private prescription by tracked postage. I put my email details etc attached. I get an email then pay by card. I receive the medication within 7 days after paying. This company is very reliable and professional. Last time I paid £65 including postage for 200 tablets 20mcg. About 30 pence per tablet.

On the prescription does the dr have to say how many I want? I know she would have to put the strength. How does it work?

On the prescription does the dr have to say how many I want?

How would they know how many to dispense and charge for if the quantity wasn't stated?

My reply above stated that your prescription should state:

Liothyronine 20mcg

and then multiples of 50 or 100 tablets.

So it might be worth asking her to put 200 then I wouldn’t have to order so often and pay to see her to get the private prescription so often.

Yes exactly. Get as many as you can in one hit. I get 200 20mcg each time on my prescription from my private Endocrinologist. My prescription lasts me a year on my current dose. They come on boxes of 100 so I get two boxes.

I see my endocrinologist on the nhs but will be seeing her privately to get the private prescription. Will I have to see her privately every time I need a new private prescription or can she just write one out when I see her in her nhs clinic? How does it work for you?

McPammy profile image
McPammy in reply to Redporti

I call my private Endocrinologist for a prescription when I need another. It is free of charge for my prescriptions, I only pay for consultations, either by phone or face to face. If she charges she may not agree for a large script. The more she prescribed the better so you don’t have to go through the rigmarole often.

And with the Brexit trade deal coming up this year who knows what will happen to getting medication from the EU.

Indeed, as McPammy says, get as many as you can on one prescription :)

Especially as we will be seeing VAT and customs clearance on things we order from the EU. Getting as much at a time as possible will reduce the effective impact of the customs clearance fee. (So long as it doesn't end up in some category which accrues a duty as well as VAT.)

Did you find out where to get T3? I have tried posting but I have followed incorrect protocols so I can't get replies to my post. I was hoping you might have had more success! Thank you

I get mine from my GP now.

Thank you. Could you please let me know what brand you are prescribed - I don't think I'll get lucky as NICE no longer approves T3, but having a name might help!

Thybon Henning 20. Good luck. I hope you can get it.

Thank you - although I doubt it as my GP says there's no such thing as T3 deficiency!
