Throat symptoms?

Hi guys, hope everyone is as well as they can be today!

I have had a thing where I need to clear my throat every few minutes for as long as I can remember. When I wake I usually have to cough stuff up. Sometimes I’ll need to cough stuff up during the day too.

It can affect my speech, too and sometimes have to have a good cough before I can talk properly!

I saw ENT years ago who found no issues. I used to smoke and drink at the time but haven’t had a drink in years and stopped smoking years ago too.

Can anyone relate to this or share opinions on what this could be related to? I literally am so used to it but really, I don’t think it’s normal!

Thanks guys 😀👍🏻

Oh, yes, absolutely. I had just about every throat symptom possible:

sore throat

coughing

losing voice in mid-sentence

croaky voice

feeling of lump in throat

difficulty swallowing

choking on my own saliva...

I still have the cough and there's still a possibility that I might choke on my own saliva - but less frequently - and my voice is… ruined, I think I have to say. But, the other symptoms have disappeared since being optimally medicated.

Thanks for your reply Goose! Oddly enough, all these symptoms started before I had Graves and the resulting hypo from RAI.

I’m sorry that your voice is so damaged. Stopping smoking brought my voice back but I don’t think it was the cause of it by any means...

The damage was done after I stopped smoking, I think. I don't know. It's all so difficult to know exactly what happened when and what caused it.

Could it be Post Nasal Drip?

cazmania7 profile image
cazmania7 in reply to Goldengirl01

I’ll google that dustpan. I’ve not heard of that before. Thanks!

in reply to cazmania7

Post nasal drip is very common with hypo

I’m googling it bow. Never heard of it! But it did start before I was hypo. I’ll have a lookey. Thanks Rita

No worries Caz :) for me it comes and goes. And when I have it, I can't smell or taste foods..it's great for nasty smells though can't smell them either then 🤣

I am forever choking on my food and only yesterday I choked on a pea! My son got concerned and started to pat my back which made me laugh.

Thankfully (or not as it may be) I have no problem hoofing down plenty of food. Mind you, I’m know for not liking dry food. Maybe it’s because of my throat!! I just thought it’s cos chewing takes up too much energy 😂

Have you tried strictly dairy or lactose free diet?

Persistent cough, mucus or post nasal drip are common symptoms

Thanks slow. I hope you are doing ok! I have not tried dairy free. Any type of elimination is just so hard for me. But I’ll look into this, thanks!

Did I read something about low stomach acid or something, and cider vinegar?

Personally my nemesis was gluten

But many find lactose is the problem

Some need to cut both

Thanks slow. I’ve plenty to google tonight! I would love a personal chef who could do the hard work for me 😂

If someone wants to eat dairy, but has mucus issues, they can try goats or sheep products, they are less mucus forming and also, the key is to consume dairy around lunch time, where digestion is at its best, otherwise, mucus may form. Also, cold dairy causes more mucus than warm. Just reading an ayurvedic book on Hashimotos x

Apparently camel milk also so ok....probably not readily available in UK supermarkets

in reply to SlowDragon

Absolutely, I know someone who orders it in, but they are in the US. It's mad expensive and it is shipped frozen I think from what she says. Goat and sheep especially raw, are more accessible. The book says to have a warm cup of goats milk with a pinch of turmeric or cardamon, it helps liver without overheating it. I'm turning to ayurveda for some advice on diet, it's quite interesting x

I tried goats milk ...just about ok in coffee...but terrible in tea

Goats cheese ...delicious

in reply to SlowDragon

I haven't tried in tea or coffee, still using oat milk for that :) I adore goats cheese and goats yoghurt!

Camel milk!! Whatever next! 🐪

in reply to cazmania7

Well apparently human milk is the new trend too...I won't be trying that!!!

I think read too that you can still eat fat free Greek yoghurt if you are dairy free. It’s safe. Unsure why

in reply to cazmania7

It is, full fat only though. It's nourishing and not processed as much as others. And should have some good bacteria in it. Edit: no fat yoghurt might be good as it's low in lactose maybe? Not sure! But it's not really nourishing and causes sugar spikes. I used to be dairy free, but I have introduce good quality dairy , organic, mainly sheep or goat, from time to time and I'm fine, no reactions so far

Ah thanks Rita. I wasn’t sure it was right as soon as I typed it. It’s really confusing and complicated. I think cheese and eggs would be the hardest things to give up for me 😫

Dairy does this to me.

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply to Thenightowl

So are you on dairy free diet?

Thenightowl profile image
Thenightowl in reply to SlowDragon

Oh yes. I very occasionally eat some but it doesn't agree with me at all. I grew up on a dairy, I always had awful stomach issues and loads of spots as a child.

Gluten intolerant too.

Oh and I've got a swallowing problem and had a barium swallow test. But that could be linked to other conditions I have. Complicated!

Hello cazmania ..yes ..i too have the throat stuff ..my voice also goes all weird and tight and i sound like fozzy bear!Luckily it comes and goes but feels like im being strangled.I also used to drink a lot but rarely do the last few years.I still have 2 -3 ciggarretes but also used to smoke at least 20 per day .

I also choke on food and my own saliva and have swallowing issues .

As you know ive just found out about the thyroid situation and so all of this just confirms these long running symptoms that we share.

Sorry about your diagnoses (have just read)

Not very nice at all .
