Has anyone tried Symprove as a probiotic please, after antibiotics ?

Hi,

I've been researching probiotics, and came across Symprove. I'm wondering if anyone has had experience of this please?

I'm currently on fairly strong antibiotics for sinus/inner ear infections, and prior to that have had a very blistered sore feeling stomach/nausea for a few weeks. I came off all supplements, including iron, and it was just improving so I was loathe to have antibiotics, but no choice in the end.

I've been exhausted for months (b12/possible thyroid/low iron/vit d,etc) and another test suggested possible candida issues, which I've had in the past, so am keen to get some probiotics started whilst I delve further!

Seems Symprove is not harmed by stomach acid. It is expensive, but it seems most good promotions are, so really interested to hear anyone's experiences please?

Thank you

Haven't used it, price put me off.

There are other brands which claim not to be affected by stomach acid. Optibac is one brand that says their live cultures "reach the gut alive".

Thanks seaside susie, I'll have a read up about them...I was hoping to just rely on saukraute and go down that route, but am worried as have read it has high amounts of histamine? And being an allergic type person anyway, am concerned it may aggravate things?

I loved Symprove! I read about it on this site, and was just going to order my 3rd bottle yesterday, and Amazon said it is no longer available. My experience was not after antibiotics however.

I'm in the US tho; if you can get it, I would give it a try.

Hi sarosent

Thanks for your message and to hear you're having a positive experience on it. When you say you love it can I ask what effects you're seeing from it please?

I hope you manage to locate some quickly so you can keep it going...thank you.

The initial effect was subtle, but I remember I just felt not so bulky & bloated in the intestines. It seemed my mood improved as well.

At that time however, I accidentally took one full cup (8 oz) as there was no measuring cap.

Have a look at Lamberts. I've used their pro biotics on and off over the years. They do different strengths. I suspect you might need the highest one from what you write, to repopulate your healthy bacteria.

You probably also know to avoid as much sugar as possible.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks very much hels333, it's difficul trying to make decisions on what to try! It's worse when you're feeing worse, as your faith in it all takes a dip.

Thank you, yes I barely eat sugar, after having candida issues in the past. I'm dairy free due to sinus ear Infections, only gluten occasionally and basically sugar free. But considering how I'll I'm feeling, I sometimes wonder if u may as well be eating a bit more of thee things!😀

I guess I'm still getting to the bottom of it all, and have more to uncover yet!

Thank you.

I used four months' worth of Symprove and felt no improvement. Optibac was much better for me.

Thank you, j_bee, glad optibac did the trick. It seems a bit of a minefield knowing what to try! Can I ask what kind of impovement you saw and how quickly, with optibac please?

My stomach felt comfortable again, as constipation eased. I always take it after antibiotics now. I take the one in the blue box. Usually feel better within a week, but take for two weeks.

Thank you, really glad it helps...

I've tried it for 3 months, can't say I have seen any difference unfortunately. Probiotics are controversial. Each of us have a very unique microbiome and most probiotics just don't work because they either get destroyed on the way or because it's not the bacteria we generally need, and there is a study confirming that taking probiotics after taking antibiotics slows the microbiome recovery. My gyno has recommended probiotics pessaries, they are supposed to be much better in a case of thrush. The gut repairs itself within 2-4 weeks. I think it's much better to eat prebiotics.

Thanks very much ritatita, really sorry to hear it hasn't made any difference. It's frustrating and expensive and uses great chunks of our time, but at least I guess you can say you've tried, but that doesn't help you feel better!

yes i read it can get destroyed, which is why the Symprove caught my eye and yes I've also heard probiotics after antibiotics can /cannot be helpful and that as you say, your own microbiome is set and unique, so maybe it's the candida problem which showed up as a potential on a recent urine test, that is the issue and contributing to why I've been feeling so poorly for months and that needs to be dealt with...

Do you mean eating the foods that naturally have probiotics or a commercial, prebiotic please?

Is that what you're planning to do next, or try another probiotic?

Thank you again...

Hey Jo!

I have tried them about 1.5 years ago, but my symptoms were down to thyroid dose, so they went away on their own. My friend took Vsl for IBS, but also no change.

It is hard, especially with candida, definitely worth trying, someone has once recommended boulardii bacteria, but I don't know much about it.

I meant more prebiotics that feed your microbiome, like kimchi, sauerkraut, cabbage, asparagus etc. Not sure if you have gynecological s symptoms too, probiotics for vaginal use are very effective, my gyno said that probiotic oral pills don't do much for thrush.

Are you already on a sugar free diet? The idea is to starve candida. Edit: just read above you are on a diet. So you don't have a diagnosis it is candida, more that it could be because of raised sugars? Any other candida symptoms? Your tongue, itchiness etc?

Absolutely, it's considered to be the best! :)

Thank you londinium for both of your replies.have been reading up your suggestion thank you. So when you advise running some microbiome tests, can I ask do you mean a comprehensive stool analysis type like Genovas or one of the microbiome type tests that are being advertised please?

I did an organics urine test recently for MMA, but it did mention raised sugars that could be due to candida (I'm basically sugar free, but had couple doses antibiotics last summer and have been struggling since) so I was considering whether to do a single candida test or go for genovas, but. Have seen these microbiome tests too?

Thanks again. Any advice gratefully received thanks😀
