TSH 10.5.......

crystal5 profile image

Latest bloods just came back with TSH 10.5,,,,,,,,

I usually sit at around 1 which is good.

I on 100 alternate 125 Levo.

Doc surgery calls for me to make an appointment but can’t see me until 28/2....had to go in and get my results printed off.

I wonder why the sudden change! Feel very tired and lost a lot of hair but it’s not the worst I’ve felt with this condition over 13 years! Should I go for a private blood test for more in depth testing? Any tips welcome...

A year ago you made a post that indicated in it's title that you have Hashi's.

This is the nature of Hashi's, test results fluctuate, as can symptoms, with Hashi's activity.

Your TSH result suggests you are going through a hypo phase of Hashi's. Did you have Ft4 and FT3 tested as well?

Hashi's tends to cause low nutrient levels, so it would be worth testing Vit D, B12, Folate and Ferritin.

Correct, it’s Hashis but I have never had fluctuating levels, always around 1.

My GP only ever tests TSH, despite me almost begging! I had antibodies tested 10 years ago and that was confirmed.

Hashi's doesn't have a set pattern, the immune system attacking your thyroid can be very random, you can be stable for quite some time then suddenly have a fluctuation. So unless something has recently happened to stop your Levo being absorbed then it's very likely due to Hashi's activity.

Guess the GP surgery threw me off balance when they put out an urgent call request! Shame they can’t see me for a month.....

Actually, Hashi's doesn't have 'hypo phases'. It is basically hypo, with 'hyper' phases. Your TSH is unlikely to have shoot up like that due to the Hashi's. I think you should either get a more in-depth private test, so we can see the Frees in comparison to the TSH, or ask your doctor for a retest in a different lab. It could well be that something has interfered with the lab testing. Do you take biotin at all, in a B complex, perhaps?

Yes I take vitamin B complex but am looking at other supplement.

My eyes are still pretty heavy this morning, very puffy.

Did you stop the b complex for a week before bloodtest? Many labs use biotin in assays and if you take biotin, as in b complex, it interferes with tests and gives false results. Suggest you need a retest to gp, and I would do private blood test covering all recommended tests on here, see what is really going on. I have just ordered Thyroid 11 test through Blue Horizon, £74.25 till midnight tonight with code newyear25.

I’ve take the same bvits for years.

So all your tests could have been off and your TSH was always high, or the GP may have started to use a different lab, or the lab has changed the assay method. Important ot stop biotin 4 days to a week before any blood test for anything

greygoose in reply tocrystal5

OK, so did you stop the B complex a week before the blood draw? If not, the biotin could have interfered with the blood test and caused the high TSH.

I’ve always taken them, for years. The only difference in my world is I have been on Citalopram for a few months but always take my Levo first thing and the rest at least 4 hours later.

greygoose in reply tocrystal5

Just because you've taken your B complex for years, doesn't mean that this time the biotin didn't affect the TSH test. Could be that the lab have changed their method of testing. But, you're not going to know anything for certain without having the FT4 and FT3 results to compare.

I’m going for a private test, just looking online to see who has the best offers

crystal5 in reply togreygoose

Nothing’s changed! I have a a friend who works in the centre where I had my bloods taken so she found out.

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply tocrystal5

OK. But other things can go wrong. The point is, with incomplete testing, we can have no idea what. Surely your doctor can understand that, no?

They’re hopeless. I had an Endo

Appt 10 years ago and he was as bad. He was more interested that “you’re not as big as a lot of thyroid sufferers and you don’t have a goiter”

I’m in really good health apart from thyroid

greygoose profile image

It's often the case. But, there's nothing much anyone can say to you without more information. So, you really need that full testing, one way or another.

I know that, I’m going to order some private blood test kits today then I can pop back with full information.

High dose biotin will cause the TSH to appear very low (mimic Graves) with the Free T4 and Free T3 levels to be falsely elevated.

Honestly don’t think that’s what’s caused it as I have taken the same stuff for years but having said that I don’t always remember to take them every day.

Levo is my priority today. I could cry today my eyes are so puffy I can hardly open them and I’ve got to work!

Angel_of_the_North profile image
Angel_of_the_North in reply tokiefer

Not always, it depends on the exact assay method it can give false high TSH and low Frees also or high everything and so on.

Nothings changed at the clinic, I’ve checked with my friend who works there. I’ve struggled today with work so now going for. 4 hour recovery nap

If you could provide links to studies showing false high TSH and low Frees I'd be glad to read it and retract my claim.

Can you call your GP and get an urgent appointment on the same day. They usually keep slots for people needing more urgent attention. I’d request another blood test and to include T4 and T3. Otherwise how will any Dr know why your TSH has elevated and how to treat. If they flatly refuse ask to speak to the practise manager and if that fails mention that you wish to report the situation to PALS, this generally works without actually involving PALS. Just be polite, calm and professional

Great advice! Booked in the GP hub Monday eve and waiting for them to confirm they will see me for this.....waited 36 hours so far for the email confirming

Just throwing this idea in to the mix...

Have you had a change of brand between the last two sets of tests? If you have it may be relevant to your increased TSH.

I always have Mercury Pharma brand
