There may be hope for us all. An excellent article on fb re a company from Leicester called Morningside Healthcare and they have just been granted a product licence for Liothyronine 20mcg. No more news as yet but fingers crossed. I had a quick check on the company, quite small but they seem to have got the licence.

Wow! I saw this bit :

Study 1: A randomised, open-label, 2-way cross-over bioequivalence study comparing thepharmacokinetics of the test product,Liothyronine Sodium 20 micrograms Tablets,to those of the reference product, Liothyronine Sodium BP 20 micrograms Tablets (also known as Tertroxin 20 microgram Tablets; Mercury Pharma Group Limited), following a 100 microgram dose (administered as 5 x 20 microgram tablets) in healthy subjects, under fasting conditions.

I wonder what the effect is of 100mcg of T3 is in a healthy individual!

I actually need it, but I doubt whether I would be happy taking such a large dose!

helvella has mentioned that Levothyroxine is tested in very high doses in healthy people. It's standard practice. I assume it is so that side effects can be identified more easily and won't get muddled up with symptoms that unhealthy people might already have.

Zephyrbear profile image

Hadn't thought of that... Makes sense, I guess. 😁

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministrator in reply toZephyrbear

The standard "healthy volunteer" testing dose for levothyroxine is 600 micrograms.

See here:

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Depending on the conversion/equivalence ratio used, that could be between about 50 and 200 micrograms of liothyronine (T3). A genuinely healthy person might not enjoy the experience but it is unlikely to be that much of an issue.

It doesn't sound ethical, does it? I would be climbing walls if I ever took 100mcg of T3

WelshDragon39 profile image

I take 100mcg of T3 per day and feel normal again. I tried 25 then 50, then reluctantly went up to 75mcg per day. At this level I was not feeling good, I was experiencing muscle pain in my legs and feet, I was often experiencing heart palpitations at night, and I was still gaining weight. I had my bloods taken and as expected my TSH level was not readable, and my T4 and T3 had not changed from when I was taking T4. I then increased it to 100mcg and everything changed, I don't have muscle aches, heart palpitations and I have started to lose weight.

Dr Lowe took 150mcg daily and he could function well. He was thyroid hormone resistant. Zephyrbear

Companies House, of course, has some information:

Looks like a pharmacist and a business-oriented person.

Well if true, hopefully force criminal Concordia to lower its ridiculously exorbitant price.

Would like to see the European ones licensed too - fair market.

radd profile image
radd in reply toradd

Ummm .. small company.

If true & cheaper, hope they are set up for expansion coz their sales are gonna go thru the roof ... even if CCG's don't initially bite & only private scripts.

humanbean profile image
humanbean in reply toradd

Being cynical as I am, I don't think they will sell at a much lower price than Concordia, but possibly a little bit lower. Will it be enough to stop it being banned? Somehow I doubt it.

I don't understand if the government is banning us from being prescribed then how can they be making this ?

Silver_Fairy profile image
Silver_Fairy in reply tolola1956

It's being withdrawn because of the high price.

lola1956 profile image
lola1956 in reply toSilver_Fairy

Yes I know which makes the decision even stranger lol

Summer64 profile image

A doctor told me this afternoon that it isn't due to the high price just the licence.

loueldhen profile image
loueldhen in reply tolola1956

They are not banning it - yet. It is being pushed out by some CCGs on the basis of cost. We are waiting for a consultation on it's removal.

in reply tolola1956

They are an international company so I suppose that they are selling abroad?

This looks like fantastic news. But - a big But - they will have to price well below Concordia. Should we write to them and beg them to be very cautious with pricing?

OK - try searching on British Thyroid Association newsletter.

A small firm in Loughborough I am not sure if it is part of a much larger company. Does anyone know?

I'm so excited for all who need it and are looking for it . I would also like to see them make a 2.5mcg dose too . In fact they should make it in all strength from 2.5 and on .

A bit worrying but I've just been talking to a neighbour (buttonholed the poor chap) about the cost of T3 and the fact that it was being withdrawn on cost grounds- he was unaware of this (he does not work as a GP but in A&E). However, although he was aware of T3 and T4 I was encourage at this point) he said that...get this...patients could just up their intake of T4 if they could not get T3 and the body would make enough T3 from the high dose of T4! Can you believe it?

Willowluv profile image

Omg! Where do they find them!!

Summer64 profile image
Summer64 in reply topenny

That's what I've been told this afternoon. He's not even upping the dose, I just have to go back to what I used to be on when I was bed ridden.

I asked my Tesco pharmacy to supply this. They rang the distributor of their drugs and were told if has not gone into production yet and there is no date for availability. Could be a long wait....

I got my first lot of Morningside Liothyronine today, thought the pharmacist had made a mistake as it comes in blister packs in a box!

Shelley1954 in reply toSheila146

Wow, not in a random brown bottle, hope I get these next month ;-)

And if you divide your dose do you use the syringe? Do you feel ok on it?

I picked up my prescription today and it's morningside. Hope that it works as well as Mercury pharma. When I tried the Thybon T3 it made me ill.

I just got my Morningside T3 today too. Hope there are no nasty side-effects like the extortionately priced yet rubbish Mercury Pharma product!

Just for info, the difference in price between Morningside and Mercury Pharma is just a few pennies a box.

kathryn103 profile image

Currently on prescription, I picked up my first ones this weekend instead of usual Mercury Pharma ones.

in reply tokathryn103

How have you been on the Morningside T3?

Yes, BUT have you looked at how you take this if you have to divide your dose. I take 10mcg x4 a day. With Morningside you have to dissolve in water and draw up in a syringe to take required dose! How stable is that? How inconvenient is that? No thank you. It’s about time our government grew a backbone and faced these companies charging extortionate prices!

Shelley1954 profile image
Shelley1954 in reply to

I have been on Morningside for a few months now, I just split the tablet as I have with other T3 tablets, when I started on them, found it quite strong so split my day between Morningside & MP. But for the last 4 weeks have been on Morningside only and have found it good.

in reply toShelley1954

That’s reassuring, I’m glad you’re doing ok. Keep well x

Sheila146 profile image
Sheila146

I spoke to my consultant about the divided doses, I take 10mcg twice a day. The pills snap in half easily despite not being scored. She felt it would be fine to take them just like that, not dissolved as that’s such a waste. I’ve been taking them like that for the last 3 months and felt fine.

in reply toSheila146

That’s good to hear, thank you
