I spent 4 years with a overactive thyroid and one of my symptoms was I couldn’t feel the cold, I was always hot and usually would be in shorts all year round.
This year in May I had my thyroid removed and now I am proper cold (yes I know it’s winter)
Is this normal? I’m actually stealing my wife’s hot water bottle and she is on about getting me one for Christmas..

The Endo said my levels showed I was underactive (no kidding) and raised it to 175 from 150.
My vitamin D was a little low and my calcium was borderline. But they didn’t test the rest. I had a blood test recently just got vitamin D and I said well because I am a vegetarian can you test for all the other vitamins. she had a right to at me,”You need to book a doctors appointment to get that done, you think we can just test for all sorts”
I wasn’t best pleased replying that it would take me till February to get a doctors appointment and while they was taking blood what harm would it be.
Typical doctors though, they want all the tests but can’t fit you in to get it tested. Honestly I have so many story’s from my doctors I could write a book.
Post your current test results, with reference ranges, and we can tell you whether or not you are optimally medicated. If you don't have them then ask for a print out, it's our legal right in the UK.
I was in your position for three months after a thyrodecotomy. This forum save my life. I am in a better place. I did not know anything about monitoring my vit . I went to A&E and ended up having all the necessary tests. I am so grateful to this site. I am slowly regaining my sanity .
My Graves' friend was always hot when I was shivering. She had her thyroid zapped with radioactive iodine & is suffering on T4. I now take NDT & T3 so the issue is reversed. I cope better with heatwaves as I have better temperature regulation now. I find NDT (currently Metavive) better for raising my body temperature than T3.
I’m sorry you are not doing well and I trust you will get the help you need. Please would you not use the name of Jesus as you are as I do not think it is sensitive to others who use this forum. Of course you can say what you want on a private message. I trust you understand. Thank you.
If you are in the UK the best option is to get full testing privately
Thyroid blood test should be done 6-8 weeks after your dose increase to 175mcg
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially with Graves or Hashimoto's
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .
Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)
Is this how you do your tests?
Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins
Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random
Extremely important to test FT3 and FT4 to see how well you are converting
Getting all four vitamins optimal can help improve conversion of FT4 to FT3
20% Patients with no thyroid can not regain full health on just Levothyroxine
