Thyroid levels and excessive b12

Hi there recent blood test came back with TSH 5.04 and free T4 11.7. No idea what this means. Also had excessive B12 at 717. It's taken two years of waiting to see neurologist. Now awaiting result of MRI and EMG. Any advice please

Your TSH says you're hypo - you are hypo when your TSH gets to 3. It means that your thyroid is struggling and therefore the TSH gets higher and higher to stimulate it.

Don't know what your FT4 says, because you haven't put the range. Please, always put the ranges when you give FT4 results.

Same for B12. Was it a serum or active B12 test? We'd only know by the range. Probably serum, being that high, so that's ok. Don't worry about the B12. :)

Sorry T4 is 11.7

That's the result, but we need the range to make any sense of it - usually found in brackets after the result. We need the ranges for your FT4 and B12.

Unfortunately this is from letter sent to GP, not the actual blood test. The B12 has a range in brackets of 191-663. I think my GP may have a copy (if they haven't lost it as usual). Thank you for your help

OK so that was a serum B12 test, so don't worry about it being over-range. But, no idea how low the FT4 is.

Nemesis123 - were you supplementing B12 - if NOT then you should ask for tests of kidney and liver function.

If you were supplementing then high B12 likely to be result of supplementation and suggest that you reduce the supplementation.

No I am not supplementing. Getting slightly worried now.

it may well be nothing as some people naturally sit above the normal range - also the test for serum B12 is only accurate to 20% so your true reading could be in the normal range anyway but it is probably worth getting liver and kidney function done if you have high B12 levels as it can be an indicator of problems in these areas

It is always best to ask surgery for a print-out (some pay charge a nominal sum for paper/ink) as the results plus the ranges should be stated. Labs differ in the machines they use and therefore 'ranges' may well be different.
