Hashimoto's and thyroid levels

Hi, I struggle with severe fatigue, joint pain, swelling in hands and ankles. I do well for a while lots of energy, then have the crash and that's when I have the symptoms above. This happens over and over again. I am 90% AIP, gluten free and am working on food sensitivities. Can you look at my most recent thyroid panel and let me know what you think?

T3 1.47 (2.00-4.00)

T4 1.25 (0.80-1.80)

TSH 1.51 (0.27-4.20)

Thank you!

Have you had vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 checked?

vitamin D is ok, I carry the MTHFR mutation of the C677T which means I don't convert B12 very well. But my B12 is in the low 800's......I also just found out a month ago I have had low stomach acid which hasn't allowed me to absorb things for quite a long time! Not sure about folate and ferritin?

Welcome to the forum, Pixychik.

Are you taking thyroid replacement?

pixychik profile image
pixychik in reply toClutter

yes, I'm currently on Synthroid 75 mcg once a day......I was on 88 mcg for several years and always had high anxiety, when my new doc lowered it to 75 most of those symptoms went away

Pixychik,

FT3 is below range and it is usually low T3 which causes hypothyroid symptoms.

I think you are a little undermedicated on 75mcg Synthroid. If you were unable to tolerate a higher dose of Synthroid perhaps your GP could prescribe 10mcg Cytomel or other Liothyronine (T3).

I may try that again, she did try to increase my synthroid to 88 mcg and cytomel 5 mcg daily but I started feeling worse

Pixychik,

Well don't do both at once because you may feel overmedicated. Why not try 10mcg Cytomel?

pixychik profile image

that's a good idea, I'll try staying at 75mcg of synthroid and try 5 mcg of cytomel, do I take it all at once and once a day?

Pixychik,

You can take them together. I don't think 5mcg Cytomel will be sufficient but start with 5mcg. When you are ready to increase dose take a second 5mcg dose 8-12 hours after the first.

so I tried the 5 mcg of cytomel with the normal 75 mcg of synthroid and didn't feel well on it, so cut it in half the following day, I seem to tolerate that better. I've had absorption issues, my theory is anything in pill form has been building up in my system making me feel unwell, but if I take liquid forms of supplements I can tolerate those. I also think honey in any amount is bad for me as I start sneezing and runny nose, same with balsamic vinegar and strawberries? This is a weird disease and not sure what to make of it all. I'm trying to repair leaky gut.......HCL is helping me a lot so far

Pixychik,

It often takes a week or two to get used to T3. If you find you are unable to tolerate it then you should consider raising Synthroid dose.

Thank you so much I'm going to do that if I take 1/2 of a 5 MCG I'm doing really well on that and I take 1/2 of a 5 MCG twice a day so maybe in a week I could try to raise it to 5 in the morning and 5 in the evening

I also wanted to say that my b12 is 835 (243-894) and vit d3 is 45 (30-80). From what I read about the C677T mutation is that I can have a high b12 lab result and still be low in b12 because my body doesn't process it well?

Pixychik,

I'm not knowledgeable about methylation. If you have the symptoms in b12deficiency.info/signs-an... go to healthunlocked.com/pasoc for advice about B12.

D3 is optimal 40-60ng/ml so you could supplement 2,500iu daily to raise level as joint pain can be due to low D3.

The labs I have are below, not sure if they would be helpful

hemoglobin A1c is 5.1 (4.6-5.9)

hemoglobin 12.5 (11.4-15.4)

hematocrit 38.8% (35-47%)

I was told by my holistic NP that I don't convert t4 to t3 very well but I am very hesitant on trying a different kind of thyroid med......

do you know of any natural ways to increase t3? I tried cytomel and didn't do well
