does Swanson Thyroid Glandular contain iodine?

I have recently tried some, just less than half a cap, and feel great especially my mood! I went on a cleaning binge yesterday.

However felt the same last year when I tried some iodine. Felt great for weeks but then suddenly gained 5 lbs. Stopped iodine, weight came off.

so concerned this mood effect is the iodine, but I can't find info on that aspect. I suppose if it's a glandular, there would be iodine in the gland ?

anybody know? thanks!

I suggest you ask Swanson! They make a fuss about being certiifed thyroxin free. No idea what they do to achieve that.

thanks! But I wanted to know NOW. LOL

So by Thyroxin they mean T4? so wonder if this product contains T3?

I will ask.

Not knowing how they remove any T4, I don't think we can say much about likelihood of having T3. Of course, both T4 and T3 inherently contain iodine.

After saying that it removes all thyroxine - Guaranteed to be completely Thyroxine free - it goes on to say:

"By introducing Swanson Thyroid Glandular to your system, you can enjoy the completely natural support of this thyroxine free dietary source. Using only the grass fed cattle of New Zealand's lush open pastures, this product prides itself on providing clean and healthy glandular as well as being a great source of this fundamentally essential group of hormones."

So, unless I'm running on empty this evening, that means that it does contain hormones - and, as thyroxine is one of this 'fundamentally essential' group of hormone,s then there is thyroxine in it, too. Or, as you suggested, did they remove the thyroxine but left the T3? None of it makes sense.

As almost always with glandulars!

I am willing to consider that the enzyme thyroid peroxidase, the monoiodotyrosine (MIT) and diiodotyrosine (DIT), together with the thyroglobulin, can have an effect. But no-one, ever, explains clearly what they mean and why the products might be expected to work. Other than, as you say, their containing T4 and or T3.

And does anyone know how you can remove T4 from thyroid glands and leave everything else?

I've never seen the point of glandulars, either.

Well drats. Does not really make sense on what it is. I did send an email, but will likely get a non-answer.

I took a sprinkle this morning because I wanted to feel that same way again, but don't want to gain weight with the iodine of course.

But what is Armour Thyroid? Isn't that essentially a 'glandular' ? - so how do they manage to only extract the T3 & T4 and not the other things?

Armour Thyroid has two major differences:

Nothing is removed - it has exactly the same constituents as the glandulars (plus some excipients to make tablets).

The amounts of T4 and T3 are controlled and declared.

The mystery about glandulars is two-fold. First, how we are told two seemingly conflicting stories - that they contain whole thyroid AND they do not contain any throid hormone. The precise words vary, of course, but I can't see how both can be true. Second, if they do not contain any T4 and T3, why take them?

It is possible to dream up all sorts possibilities but I certainly don't know of any proved reasons.

I got a reply - good news for me re: the iodine. So I will keep taking it in moderation.

I did then ask, if it does not contain T3, T4, nor iodine, what it DOES contain. so I see what you mean about glandulars. thanks for the discussion!

After speaking with our Product Specialists we have found out the Thyroid Glandular does not contain iodine. Also, the thyroxin-free notice means that there is no active hormones in this supplement. Therefore there is no T4 or T3. I hope this helps. Take care.
