Back of neck aching bad.

Suffering from a very stiff neck at the back, on both sides, for the last couple of days. Does anyone have this or anything similar?

Any advice to relive symptoms would be appreciated please.

I am hashi and hypo, taking T3 and NDT.

Hi

Yes I suffer really bad on and off with this. I have made a connection that it may be to do with my thyroid levels, the tops of my shoulders also develop muscular knots as well.

I tried acupuncture, chiro, massages and it does not help.

When I tried T3 only, it was made worse, and I ended up in A&E twice with awful headaches, vision issues and barely being able to move my neck, the stiffness was terrible. They could find nothing wrong.

The only relief was one of those heat bean bag things that are for around your neck from Argos and taking paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Mine comes and goes, but since being on NDT it's not as bad, but nor perfect.

Best Wishes

Peanut31 thank you so much. I will take the pain killers and see if a shake up of my NDT/T3 ratio helps. I feel great otherwise!

Heated bean bag and maybe ask one of my teenage sons to rub my neck/shoulders 😆.

Letty222 - This was something that gave me grief for years. It stopped as soon as I stopped commuting and started working for myself. The only time I get anything similar now is if I catch a draught across my neck, but now it will clear up of its own accord. Previously, it required a trip to a very good chiro (the sixth one I tried, and who I then stayed with for years - the first five chiropractors either made no difference or made it worse), although I did eventually learn to help it myself based on what she did. As for the cause, for me I put it down to draughts and stress. Assuming that you haven't pulled muscles or suffered from whiplash, it could be the same for you (although it might not be, of course). I don't go anywhere without a snood or scarf these days.

Happy to share details of the very good chiro if you are in the same general area (she is in Burgess Hill in West Sussex).

Actually, there was one other thing that helped, although I cannot take them anymore as they contain lactose, to which I am allergic. That thing is Syndol. I do have a sneaky suspicion that they might have been reformulated though (they went off the market for a while), so whether they are still effective for this, I do not know.

JumpJiving I am in process of conveyancing and trying not to get stressed... but probably failing. The weather has been awfully damp and that is probably adding to it. I’m just putting on a silk scarf- thanks for top tip!

Moving to Devon so chiropractor too far but will look into a good chiro/osteopath when there. Thank you for taking time to answer too xx

i get this. came on a few months ago and comes and goes. i find without even any stress my shoulders quickly end up beside my ears. if i pay attention and force them down, the pain recedes and the headache eventually goes. if it gets too bad then i need painkillers.

I am now aware of the raised shoulders and posture and am forcing my shoulders down. It is a little easier moving head to left and right but still awfully painful.

Thanks for commenting. I wondered if it was just a "me" thing but obviously not...

i think in my case it's thyroid-related anxiety, as psychologically i'm not stressed.

Letty222 profile image
Letty222 in reply to Nico101

Yep. Thyroid related I believe as well too.

it's weird it can make you physically stressed when you aren't!

i was using an osteopath a few months back. did feel better immediately after, but just came quickly back the next day. he did tell me my tense shoulders were compressing my cervical spine - hence the stiffness and headaches. this made me very aware of my shoulders and that's when i realised they just kept tensing up of their own accord.

it's a lot cheaper just to keep forcing them down. at least i know what's wrong. i thought i'd badly injured my neck somehow.

I get this too, I’m also aware of the posture thing and try to force my shoulders down, nothing helps it though, I came to the conclusion that it was down to my Fibro but it gets worse when my thyroid is playing up, it’s been terrible lately.

I get pain when I look left and I haven’t been able to look over my right shoulder or turn my head to far in that direction for years though.

Doesn’t really help you but I just wanted you to know that you’re not alone in these wonderfully weird symptoms that creep up on us xx

LuluCops thank you. I am very grateful for the words of support as I sit here wincing if I even remotely turn my head a little. So sore. Like us all suffering from thyroid problems, I will throw everything at it and see what works. Ever hopeful xx

i thought i'd injured my neck - even though i couldn't remember doing it. it helps me knowing all these weird symptoms are down to the same thing. i thought i was generally falling apart and old age had come early. turns out it's my bloody thyroid - again!

Yes. Bloody thyroid-again! Thanks for sharing.

This happens to me when I try to reduce my thyroid meds and I know that as soon as I get this symptom I know I have to 'up' it again and it goes.

Thanks positivethinking. Interesting to hear. I will consider it next week after I’ve seen if my jiggle of NDT/T3 has helped at all.

very interesting. i was undermedicated for hypo and then had to stop metavive for tests. just gone back on them and then ndt arrived so started taking that. hope this helps my neck, then.

Peanut (above in thread) said the NDT helped her with these symptoms over T3. Hence my Metavive II/T3 jiggle. I think everyone is different but I need a bit of both. Metavive II is my NDT, no complaints on that is tiromel but I’m getting lots of hypo symptoms other than neck so would fit it’s just another darned hypo symptom to add to the growing list.

Hi, a stiff neck was one of the earliest symptoms I had when I became hypo after RAI treatment- Endo said it was nothing to do with my thyroid, it must be arthritis- that was over the 'phone !! I know it's my thyroid ☹️

Letty222 profile image
Letty222 in reply to Gingernut44

Over the telephone he said that? That’s super of him! Looks like another hypo symptom from all the feedback.

I get exactly the same thing on and off for years now, at first I thought it waslow B12 but after years of supplementing think it's just another thing related to my thyroid levels.

Letty222 profile image
Letty222 in reply to Hormone-hell

My B12 is high high. In fact dr has told me to stop supplements due to this. Looks like it is a hypo symptom unfortunately.

Hormone-hell profile image
Hormone-hell in reply to Letty222

I had an active B12 of over 300 once with some annoying eye pain which did go away after not supplementing so much, so it could be B12 related too. Trying to work out what causes what is such a minefield!

Letty222 profile image
Letty222 in reply to Hormone-hell

I’m happy for neck pain to go away right now 😆. I keep catching myself every time I forget and try to turn head and bam! Ouch! Keeping eye on posture too and moving it around.

My B12 is optimal now but It wasn't when my neck started to hurt, I'm still suffering from a stiff neck I think because I'm not converting well. I'm going to try NDT as soon as it comes and hope this might be the answer to my ongoing hypo symptoms 😊

yeah, my b12 is also high. i've had to stop it for a while, so defo not that. the last few days i've also had a funny nerve-type tingling in my right check on and off that also goes down my neck.

Hi have you tried magneium oil - I use it to rub into areas that become troublesome - follow instructions though.

Other symptoms I have found out about over the last 25 years - gap in teeth - thyroid - upper arm cold and red - Hashi's - red flash in middle of forehead pituitary struggling to produce either ACTH or thyroid hormone and as my thyroid goes up and down on a daily basis - one eye slightly dropped - not enough need a little more - I am lucky though I take liquid so easy to drop it down or up it at will. Also it should be remembered that in hot weather thyroid doesn't need to work so hard so I drop meds down slightly if I overheat and in colder weather if I am freezing cold I up it. Pot belly and enlarged rear - low thyroid hormone or not getting through into the cells.

Wow. Yep, up and down dosing is something I have considered. I do have magnesium oil so will give it a go tonight. Thank you 🙂
