My endocrinologist has written me a private prescription for liothyronine. Can any one advice the cheapest place to get it from. I've been told if a company in Germany but wondered if anyone uses thus medication, where you get it from and the cost.

It will be cheaper to send your prescription to Germany (about 31 euros plus postage for 100 tablets I believe) and details are on this page of ThyroidUK's main website

thyroiduk.org/tuk/treatment...

Parcelmed and Bennewitz are often mentioned on the forum.

Your prescription has to be written

Liothyronine 20mcg 100 tablets

It can't say Liothyronine Sodium or 25mcg.

Beat me by seconds! :-)

Note: Only as long as the EU (in this case, Germany) recognise UK prescriptions. Unlikely after brexit.

It’s a worry. I’m going to see my private Endo on Tuesday. I’ve got enough to see me up to around Christmas but I wonder if he’ll write me another script to take me beyond this period until we see what the hell we’re all gonna do 😩

It is an issue which I have not seen discussed in the general media at all.

Perhaps because not many need this facility, so it's considered a non-issue? It would be interesting to know what percentage of UK prescriptions are actually used outside the UK.

It's a jolly helpful feature of our arrangements for things like holidays and working abroad - you don't even have to live in thyroid-crazy-land to see the potential benefits.

Please don’t shoot the messenger but:

The reciprocal agreements regarding healthcare within the EU apply to so much more than the odd prescription. In case of no-deal Brexit free emergency treatment in other member states will cease as will the monthly health insurance contributions for UK pensioners in the EU. Having to fund health insurance out of a UK state pension would be a considerable burden.

i agree that the changes will be significant possibly affecting very large numbers in all sorts of ways.

I picked up this specific issue because those who need the German pharmacy route could find themselves suddenly with no supply route. Particularly unpleasant if you have only just found the German route.

I think at least some other issues have been discussed quite widely across the media.

Hi - living in Germany I read only one UK daily (Guardian) and have not seen this discussed much. sorry! My husband is a British pensioner, and the hassle he has had with the German health insurance (and doctors, pharmacies when he appeared uninsured twice this year) was enormous. Endless letters and phone calls. Difficult enough in your own language, I would dread dealing with it in French or Spanish...

The German pharmacies I spoke to set no limit (within reason) to the number of items on a private prescription.

Maybe you can get a year‘s supply prescribed? Good luck!

I use Bennewitz. Takes a couple of weeks but that’s purely down to postage! It’s Thybon Henning 20mcgs tablets.

I'm prescribed 5mg twice a day and can only seem to find 20mg tablets?

You’d need to quarter them. Wouldn’t work and you’d have to get your GP to write a new prescription. Sorry can’t help with 5mcg tablets. What brand were you taking before? You’d need to post the name so that someone can help you.

Never had them before alway just had levo but my endo and prescribed me liothyronine as well today but its a private prescription

So sorry, I can’t help as I’m on 20mcgs. Hopefully someone who’s on 5mcgs will respond to you.

Hi Sonya sigmapharm and perrigo do 5mcg tablets. They are gluten and lactose freeI paid for the trial my endo prescribed for me and it was extortionate 281 for a pot of 90 tablets from my local pharmacy who shopped around. Next time I ordered them online and it was approx 90 . After this my gp prescribed but this may soon be withdrawn. I’ve been unable to pm you the details of online supplier for the 5mcg tabs. If you need it please try to pm me and I will reply. I know take ten mcg per day. Doc has changed to providing 20 mcg tabs which are impossible to split into quarters . Good luck regards Moira

Libertas is the new name. I think it is the same formulation as Paddock > Perrigo > Mayne Pharma.

Hi! I take Thybon and my daily total varies between 60 and 65 mcg.

The 20 mcg tablets can be split in half easily. Splitting those halves again may not give you an exact 5 mcg but it will level out over the day (according to my pharmacist).
