Here is a study that looks at the possibility of immunotherapy for the treatment of Graves - an interesting read with a new perspective .

Wow thank you so much!

Looks like I should have had definitive treatment from the start?!

But with untrained inexperienced GPs as doctor, I wouldn't have been able to make that decision back then. And now it is probably too late : ( DAMN!!

Also wanted to say how sorry I am that you have had such difficulty with your doctor - I hope you can find someone to provide you with the right treatment.

God bless you dear : )

Dear Ling,

This treatment is likely several years off - clinical trials and the specific immunotherapy will need to be tested - so we are out of luck in any case on that one since we have been treated. We can’t look back - hopefully we will move forward and try to stay as healthy as we can given our condition. Wishing you all the best!

This is not entirely true. Plant sterol are one of the immunomodulants for graves and they are easily accessible in any pharmacy. I went on them daily and achieved and am maintaining remission for the last year

Is that in tablet form?

Yes I know.

Thanks for pointing it out though.

Unfortunately, it'll be nigh impossible to find a thyroid trained doctor under the subsidised health care system. I'll only be able to see one if I'm going to have RAI?!#

I happened to have a conversation with an world expert in lung cancer just yesterday. Immunotherapy is causing autoimmune diseases in cancer patients

Here is a link for you that talks about this very issue. That’s why I think we are some ways away from this still - and more careful study will be needed to see if it is particular immunosuppressants, or particular drugs that cause this reaction. Sending you good wishes for your health!

There was a related article on selenium and graves. It looked quite promising. Selenium is also important in the treatment of Hashimoto’s (what I have). So, thank you so much for this attention to this study - The GRASS study is the one that I am referring to. We have known for some time that selenium somehow helps and here in the study that shows or begins to establish the science for understanding why. Again - powerful stuff! Thanks so much.

Reading the other replies, and especially as they refer to immunimodulation....how is selenium related to the term plant sterol? How is plant sterol an immunimodulator? Here in the US I am not familiar with the term plant sterol. It sounds like a steroid of some kind? Only natural? I have certainly never seen it in any pharmacy. The comment on the cancer expert was concerning.

You are welcome! Here is link to one the studies cited in the article I posted that talks specifically about these treatments:

I also think it is important when using any kind of natural treatments to remember to check to make sure they do not interact with other meds you are taking. Even natural ingredients have powerful effects.

It will be interesting to follow this line of research to see what will happen. I too, found the comment of the Ling expert concerning - it may be certain drugs used - I plan to follow that up with my own research. All the best to you and sending you good wishes for your health.
